I've recently checked out the various programs which are scheduled to start at boot-up. I then went down the list in Ccleaner and disabled all those I didn't need to start at that time. Since then I've been using my pc regularly each day and have not encountered any negative impact resulting from my action.

Would you mind having a look at the attached text file which shows the programs which do, and those which don't, load at startup, please? As I said, I've not had any negative reactions as a result of the trimming, but perhaps someone might have an opinion on the matter.

    Thank you.

Unless you have the paid version of SuperAntispyware it does nothing by loading at startup. The free version does not have any auto-protection capability. (Also, if use the free SAS, you can set its service to manual)

IgfxTray - not needed unless you frequently change resolution, screen settings or use a projector. Available in control panel if needed.

IMSS - in my opinion, not needed unless you really want Intel telling you what driver updates are available. Also hooks into Web browsers.

Persistence - not needed unless you change monitors often or use a docking station for laptop.

RTHDVCPL - Realtek sound applet. Not needed unless you always use it. The regular volume control is good enough. You can run the applet from control panel if need it.

SunJavaUpdateSched - if you use java in your browser then let this run because the java plugin often gets security updates, esp if use IE.

Privatefirewall - how is this any better than the built in Windows firewall?

    Thanks, Tony.

I have the paid version of SuperAntispyware.

From what I've read I see your point about Windows firewall being sufficient in protecting inbound traffic. I suppose I just felt that a third-party firewall would offer more protection with outgoing traffic. That, of course, would require a greater knowledge of what one should allow. Your own opinion on the use of a third-part firewall would be welcome.

I'll take your advice on the other items you mentioned. Much appreciated. ;)

I have not used a 3rd party FW for years. The MS one does fine. SunJava is a security problem waiting to happen. I have not had it installed on any of my PC's for a couple of years and have never had the need for it since I uninstalled it. Kids and grandkids use my PC's all the time and Lord knows where they go and they have never had to need it. It is your choice. If a program needs it, it will tell you and you can worry about it then.

As you say, if there's a need for something again after I disable it at startup I can permit it at that time.

    Thanks everyone. ;)

I was referring to Java. Uninstall it is what I was getting at. Should of been more clear.

I want it OFF my machines. If it ain't there, they can't get into it to do any damage.
