What's the history behind the issue? Is it a new install or did you make ANY changes to the pc prior to it starting?

    Hi Bob,

I think you may be experiencing the beginings of a hardware failure - either the Monitor or the video card.

You can start by testing using XP's built in diagnostic:

Start > run > type dxdiag > ok.

Let us know what results you get.

Does the monitor indication light (usually green) comes on? Is it yellow & blinking?

    Hi Bob,

You don't seem to have straightforward problems :)

    Can you answer rsinfo's question?

Do the obvious, make sure that the cable hookups to the Monitor are tight.

If you feel comfortable with going into the case, re seat the video card - be careful, pull it out slowly, exerting even pressure pulling out and pushing back in.

Look at the status of the Monitor and video card in DM:
Right click My Computer > properties > Hardware > Device Manager.

Expand Display Adapters > Right click the video card > properties, gives you the status.

    Same with the Monitor.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Bob,

I find that, to say the least, strange that the BIOS wouldn't have booting from the CD Rom as an option.

Download SIW: http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw.html - it's an execute, no need to install.

It'll give you all sorts of info on your system, one of which is the BIOS version and will be a reference when people will ask for info on system specs.

EDIT: I just looked at SIW again, it'll tell what boot devices the BIOS supports. Copy/paste it here along with the version.

I'm leaving town for 3 weeks, so I'll be around only intermittently.

FWIW, this system is in Forida - bad climate for electronics, and I asume idle a good deal of the time. So do agree that it is some sort of hardware malfunction.

    Regards - Charles
