I've got an old XP that used to reboot just fine straight thru the various Windows and Welcome to the desktop.

Now it starts with a large WIN FAST which is the name of the motherboard and then it goes to a black/white screen that says on the bottom:

Press TAB to show POST screen, DEL to Enter Setup

The next black/white screen starts with:

    IDE Channel 0 Master
IDE Channel 0 Slave ...........(all the way through 0-5)

    and at the bottom:

CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded
Press F1 to continue, DEL to Enter Setup

then the usual WindowsXP and blue Welcome and the desktop

Everything else runs fine but how can I get back my normal startup without the two pauses?

Change your CMOS battery, indications are it's failing/failed.

The boot screen you are seeing now is the default (which can be switched off in BIOS settings) given that and the "CMOS checksum error" the first place I would look is the battery.

    wildfire,

Thanks for the tip. You're right, the battery was dead. I put a new one in but the boot up problem is exactly the same, incl the checksum error.

What do I look for to change when I go into the BIOS?

Hi robls99.If you have the option to select default bios settings that will revert to default settings as they were.On mine it's F5 when I'm in the bios setup screen. Then make sure on the boot tab you have the harddrive that the O/S is on is selected!Exit and save.Restart.A system restore might get you to where you want to be too?Just trying to help:).

Setting Defaults in the BIOS is a good suggestion. Be careful to "Save and Exit" when you are finished.

BIOSes are different/individual between machines so we can't guide you with any specific information. Reading in the motherboard manual could prove helpful.

Let us know if you can't progress.

From my experience, making the default setting and saving on Exit has fixed that problem. (All it probably needs is for you to go into the BIOS and confirm the settings by saving them.)

    Thanks guys.

mattman's suggestion to just "Save and Exit" took care of the checksum error so that now boot up goes straight thru to the desktop without intervention.

    Have a great week.
