I'd like to purge my start-up programs so that my boot time is more reasonable (right now it's close to a minute and a half). Can you recommend a free program that will list my start-up programs and tell me which are essential and which I can turn off?

I'm using Windows 7 and I know about msconfig. The point is... when viewing the line-up of starting programs, I do not know which are essential and which I can safely shut off. That's why I need a program that will indicate this. Castlecops (I think that was the name) used to provide that information. What programs will do this now?

Sorry, I need not of asked what your OS was as you have posted in the Windows 7 forum:eek:.

Anyway, I'm using windows 7 and in msconfig under Startup I only have Microsoft Seurity Client and a small prog that monitors hard drive health.

If you are actually referring to Services then that is a different matter.

This guide will help with start up programs.

    And this is for Services.

On this link there is another link to download a program called AutoRuns, that looks close to what you are looking for.

If you are referring to third party startups I would recommend WinPatrol which has a start up section where third party startups can be disabled - screenshot.

In fact I run Winpatrol all the time as it monitors additions to the startup list arising from the installation of programs or updates and excludes Windows startups unless the hidden startups box is checked. Does lot more too :).

    ..and to add to it...
"msconfig" shouldn't be used for playing with startups.
It's designed as a troubleshooting tool only.
