    I am using Win98SE, IE6.0
When I click Start, then Run and type in: msconfig and OK then click start TAB, I have a huge list of programs that are unchecked, plus check marks on programs I want to start when I turn on computer.
How can I delete the unchecked programs, that I am sure I won't want on StartUp? When I right-click an unchecked program I get a message: "what's this?" (is there a way without editing Registry?)

As a carrot......and I am not sure whether this is permissible on this BBS.....and can be expunged by an administrator. This isn't intended as an Ad for myself. I have created this site to help anyone that can use computer help via computer tips, cool links, and everyday tips.....and certainly not to compete with this BBS.
    My site is: www.irvings-info-page.cityslide.com

A great prog for keeping control of your
startups is Mike's startup control panel
Once installed it will place an icon in your
control panel. I don't like using msconfig.
for controlling my startups because of those leftover reg. entries. Check it out
    here:

This is an excellent freeware program that works with Win98, Win2X, WinMe, and WinXP. It allows you to delete entries that you no longer need. It can be found at:

    Thank U both for suggestions.
I've downloaded both programs and will see which one to use and keep.
I've had "Start Up Cop" for some time, and I think that both of the other programs do the same thing.
I was afraid to delete some of the unchecked startup items, but am going to take a "shot" at some.
(there was a web-site that gave a rundown of which programs in the start menu could be left unchecked (I lost the link), but it didn't tell me whether it would be safe to delete....just to leave unchecked.
If someone has the link (I believe it was a uk link), others on the BBS can also appreciate putting in favorites.

Useing msconfig to eliminate unessesary startups
Go to start run type msconfig hit ok

To run Windows Me & 98& se, Scanregw, Systray, the two Load Power Profile entries, State Manager and PC Health are the only needed items.
Check out the others in one or more of these places.

from information gatherd at these web sites you can figure after unchecking what to uninstall, or what to keep.

To run Windows Me & 98& se, Scanregw, Systray, the two Load Power Profile entries, State Manager and PC Health are the only needed items.

In Win98, 98SE the only items absolutely required to run at start up are Explorer and Systray.

Actually Scanregistry should be loaded but is not required. I do not think it to be a sensible idea to not load it as it is what makes the registry backups. ( which BTW is one of MS few better ideas )

Power Profile is only needed if Power Management in the Control Panel is used.

I just did a Cntrl-Alt-Del and the only two OS files loading are Exlporer and Systray. Out of five items loaded. Those two and Scanregistry are the only OS files shown in Startup Cop also.

I will not even discuss ME because I have my own opinion of that and believe me it is not the best.

    Cant answer that question
windows me has a cleanup button on the startup panel of msconfig, But frankly I afeared to try it, rather trust a program to remove its entry and if it wont I leave.

    maybe BillyBob will instruct

    That is very easily done.

I am assumming that you do indeed have Startup Cop and this what I will base my reply on.

    Forget msconfig.

Run Startup Cop and uncheck anything that you feel is not needed. If you Right Click on a file it will ( usually ) tell you what program is using it.

Just becareful that you do not shut down any AV or firewall. Or Explorer, Scanregistry and System Tray.

Run the machine for a day or two and see if any broblems arise.

Then when all seems well right click on a flie and check Pack for Removal. after the next restart you can then right click again and remove it. This does removed it from the Registry also.

    :) :)
    Thank U one and all.
I am so pleased with all of the replies. I intend to copy/paste all of the links to an e-mail to myself for future reference.
In my humble opinion, Windows BBS is about the best help site forum, and I usually recommend it to everyone I know. As a mater of fact, I list it in "cool links" on my web-site.
