Start Menu icons (unwanted)

I have been getting unwanted icons in my Start menu. If I left click on a desktop shortcut, it automatically pins that shortcut to the Start menu. I didn't see anything in the FAQ's which is the same as my problem. I have to unpin those shortcuts periodically.

I found out that the Microsoft default is to add frequently used shortcuts automatically to the Start menu. It hadn't done that until 3 weeks ago. To prevent this from happening again, as I want to chose what goes on the Start menu, I did the following: click on task bar, select Properties, click Customize on Start menu and change Numbr of programs on Start menu to '0' and click Clear List, OK, Apply and OK. I may have not been real clear on my original post. Thank you
