    Hello All,
I have a client whose WIN 7 installation goes into StandBy & then will not wake up. We have to unplug the machine & restart to get Windows back. This has happened occasionally on my Vista machine but it happens quite regularly on his Win 7 box.

A search of Windows BBS indicated some problems caused by registry cleaners on XP systems back in '06 & '07 but I was wondering if anyone has seen this w/ Win 7. His installation is brand new & no clean-ups have been performed as yet.

Start your troubleshooting by running powercfg /energy from a command prompt.

When finished, copy C:\Windows\System32\energy-report.html to the desktop & open it with IE.

    Arie,
Thanks for the tip. I'll see what the report says.

could I ask how it goes into standby?? About a month ago I started having issues with my Win 7. All of sudden whether you are in a program or if the machine is just sitting idle, everything "locks ". What I have been doing is ctl-alt-del, click on task manager which it will accept, then I click cancel and everything is back to normal until the next time it happens. I have traced error messages, no obvious answers. Looking for other people that are having "locking" problems. Thanks

In the case of my client, it happens whilst he is away from his PC so there's not much to report there. It appears that after whatever idle time limit is reached, the machine goes in to Standby & stays there. All this is happening at the client's location & he has pulled the plug and restarted long before I arrive on the scene.

I tried your suggestion but ran into a problem. When I type in powercfg /energy from the command prompt, it comes back & says that it requires administrator privileges and that I should submit this command from an elevated command prompt. The problem is that the one and only account on this PC is an Administrator account.

    Howard,
To get an elevated command prompt, go to>

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click on 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run as Administrator'

AFAIK, unless the -D parameter is used to set the path of the output file the above command will create the html file in the User's directory and another copy in root\program data\microsoft\windows\power efficiency diagnostics\energy-report.html.

It will create it where the command prompt opens... and when I right-click cmd.exe & choose Run as administrator, mine opens in C:\Windows\System32\

    Folks,
After two snow storms and a couple of days without power, I finally have the power information from my client. (I have asked him to send me a screen shot of the power options in his control panel but he is still offline because of the storms). I was able to get the powercfg /energy report by hiking to his house through one of the snow storms.

The report highlighted the following errors:
The report also highlighted the following warnings:

Lots of USB devices that can cause problems & wireless adapter too.

My suggestion: don't try to use standby... lots of problems.

Do you have any of the "Wake" options set in your BIOS?

You should start a thread of your own on this and not hijack somebody elses thread.

Hijack? Excuse me but if you read the statement Bill, I'm having the same problem WHILE SLEEPING. Do you have anything worth adding besides control panel or a rotary phone?

I've checked the BIOS many times, it seems it only does it when, believe it or not, my other 64 bit box comes out of sleep. I'm trying to understand the link between both boxes on the same network. When one comes out of sleep, it wakes the other, the other tends at times will restart, I can't figure out what one has to do with the other. I have made sure that media is allowed to sleep but I can't figure out why the one restarts on it's own. Must be a driver issue. I've updated every driver including the BIOS.
