I have a IBM aptiva running 98se with about 190 memory with a k6 chip. The problem is when I put the computer in the standby mode often it will not come back to life by presing the start button and you have to do a complete shutdown to get it back on. I had trouble with illegal shutdowns and short term lockups so reformatted the hard drive and reloaded the software but problem is still there. It doesen`t do it every time but it is getting worse. The diagnostics don`t show any problem and device manager looks ok so what is wrong and how do I cure the problem.
    Thank You.

Here is something to look at first. Go into Device Manager and click on the plus sign next to System Devices. Look for an entry named Advanced Power Management Support, it will be right at the top. Even after a clean install, I have noticed it doesn't always get installed. If missing, go into Control Panel, run the Add New Hardware Wizard and let it search on it's own. If it is there, remove it and then run the New Hardware Wizard.

I have read (maybe even at Microsoft KB) that Start>Shutdown>Standby is for laptop computers to save batteries and should not be used for a PC.
    Any thoughts?
(I have also gone through similar problems, but not since I stopped using that and only use Windows power management.)
