New pc Dell Dimension 5000. Win SP2. PC would not come out of standby using mouse or keyboard - had to power off and restart.Went to System/Hardware/Device Manager/Keyboard and Mice / Power Management and checked "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby "on both. Now when I go Start /Turn off computer/Standby , the computer "hangs ". Any suggestions? Thanks, Seamus Halford.

Standby can cause all sorts of problems - I would avoid using it. Set up a power profile to turn off the monitor and set hard drives, Standby and Hibernate to Never - IMO.

    what pete said.

I've written and debugged many a device driver, and i dont even trust my own code to wake up right, it can be a big deal to get working properly. Its one thing when you have a laptop with drivers specifically designed (and tested) to take a nap.. Pointless trauma on a desktop

In spite of all the comment to the contrary in a recent thread, I still don't recommend using Standby or Hibernate either. Unnecessary trauma says it pretty well. Considering what a thrill seeker I am in general with my system, that should show how much satisfaction I have gotten from attempting to use them.

Seamus - the responses you've gotten on this thread are a VERY rare occurance. The forum is normally all about problem solving and almost never about the, "Doctor, it hurts when I touch my ear. Well then, don't touch your ear ", sort of fix.

However, I'm gonna echo what has already been said. If standby or hibernate are causing problems, quit using them.

FWIW, I belong to the same group as surferdude2 in that I use the power-saving stuff with my laptop on occasion but do not ever use either mode on a desktop.
