Got a strange problem on a new build (Specs should show below my name). When I loaded Windows7 Pro 64bit it created a System Reserved partition (typical 100 MB) which is normal, worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, then all of a sudden it started popping up an Auto-play notification for a G: drive (which I don't have). It was popping up about every 2 seconds which wouldn't allow me to do anything because there were anywhere from 10 to 30 Auto-play's running, no way I could even have time to hit Shut Down or Restart, every time the Auto-play popped up the Start Menu would go away, forcing me to hit the Reset button, then it would restart Windows and the same thing would start again.

If I went into Safe Mode the problem wouldn't show up, but then restarting Windows normally and the problem was back. I've tried everything I can think of, found out if I stuck a USB Flash Drive in the problem would quit (Flash drive shows up as G: drive, which is correct, and the ghost drive shows to be H: drive, and doesn't create any problems with Auto-play, and Auto-play just shows up once asking if I want to open it in Windows Explorer or one of the other options it normally shows.

With the Flash drive in a USB port I was able to get into the Administrative Console and look at the storage portion, everything looks normal there, the System Reserved partition shows to be a 100 MB,NTFS, Healthy, Primary Partition, the rest of the SSD shows C: 465 GB NTFS, Healthy, System, Boot, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition.

Before I learned the Flash drive trick I got desperate and assigned a drive letter (Y) to it, that stopped the Auto-play from popping up, but it's a chewing gum & baling wire fix at best. I tried to do a backup of the C: drive to an external drive with the partition assigned a drive letter and it can't complete the backup using Windows Backup. Anyone have any idea's to fix it, or even experienced a problem like this, I'm all out of ideas at this point.

Hi MrBluesDJ, When in Safe Mode did you look in Task Manager to see what is at Startup?
Other than that it must be something in the Registry playing up. Neil.

Didn't think to look at the Task Manager in Safe Mode, did look at it in normal boot mode but didn't notice anything unusual, that's about the only thing I haven't thought of to do. I've tried using System Restore at several dates prior to the problem showing up, didn't do anything. I'm comfortable running Regedit, but have no idea what to look for. If you've got any suggestions of what to look for in the registry I'm open to suggestions (and bribing if necessary <G> )

Why not turn autoplay off. Orb\run\regedit\H_KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers] In the right pane right click on DisableAutoplay click on Modify change the 0 to 1 click Ok. exit registry. Back up your registry first.

Well, looks like the link posted by Retiredlearner was the answer, turns out my TomTom software was the culprit, I disabled it using Msconfig, both in the Startup & Services tabs, guess I'll just start it manually, been up & running for 9 hours now without a glitch so I'm gonna mark this as RESOLVED !! and thank the 2 gentlemen who responded. Crazy part is I've got it installed on my old computer, updated the TomTom about a month ago so with no problems, outside of installing it on this computer it's never been used. Thank you again.

What OS was your old comp running? This may be a compatibility problem. Neil.

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, same as the one I've been having problems with, both have most of the same program's loaded except for some I just don't use anymore, such as Lightscribe, been on my old computer since I built it not long after Win 7 came out, but never used. Same Avast virus program, both updated to the latest versions, all Windows Updates installed on both computers and up to date. Basically I had maxed out the all the performance I could squeeze out of the old one, just wanted a newer, faster computer.

Sounds like Tom Tom beat the system. It appeared on the link that quite a few had the problem associated with T T. Neil.
