Hello, I am working on several projects in my new role as IT Manager, to be brief we have several issues which have mounted up over the years from previous IT staff, I have just commissioned a new Proliant ML370 server running SBS 2003 et al and I am in the process of user migration on to the new domain, however for some reason my predecessor’s have used two SBS servers, one running 2000 SBS and the other 2003 SBS, it is a very complicated setup and is very unstable for many reasons, until our developer completes the business application I am forced to continue using these two other servers on my network as they are both SQL servers running the current business application and have several linked servers in the SQL setup.
Due to the lack of documentation I am not confident enough to move the SQL catalogues over to the new server along with the IIS web services under Windows 2000 as several attempts have failed under a test environment so my question is as the SQL server(s) are setup to use SQL server authentication, correct me if I am wrong but there should not be an issue in continuing their use for the short term as the application does not use AD/Windows authentication?

Any advice would be very welcome, thank you in advance.

Yes. You should be able to shut down the AD related services on the SBS 2000 system and run it like a standalone application/database server.

Without delving into the web service application and checking how it connects to the database, moving to another server (especially one running different versions of IIS and SQL) is going to be problematic.

Therefore, it sounds like running the old server as a standalone web application server would be your best way forward. I'd recommend you work through all the services on that PC and change those you no longer need to disabled or uninstall services such as AD, DHCP, WINS and DNS.

Hi Reggie, thank you for that advice, that was my gut instinct however I needed some professional clarification to re-enforce my level of confidence before making any further changes, oh dear what a mess. Never mind though, it is a good learning curve for me and something to get my teeth into, thanks again for your advice.
