I have just come across a program called SpywareGuard from Javacool Software the same people that provides SpywareBlaster which i know has a good reputation. It is describe as follows:-
An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware! And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard.
SpywareGuard now also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection
you can get info and download it free Here
I would be grateful of any comments regarding this program

I have both of these programs running with XP Pro SP2 alongside my AV/ active AT, Ad-watch & IESpyad plus my firewall.

SpywareGuard will run 'real time' and is in my system tray with all options for protection enabled. SpywareBlaster does not need to be running (as such) as when you 'enable' all protection it will protect your browser IE/Mozilla/Firefox to prevent restricted sites and diallers etc from being installed on your computer. SG does this also but they do complement each other and I do not have any conflicts running both of them with my suite of security guards. I would recommend adding to your layers of security as I feel it is a much better approach to have security 'layers'.

SG is not updated very often but will still provide the security stated. SB is updated approx. monthly after which you are able to protect against the new items added to the database. The only thing I would mention is if you have IESpyad installed make sure and cjeck the protection for SB when IESpyad list is updated as sometimes there is an overlap. This is easy to remedy as you just enbale all protection again with SB.

Hope this helps (I have had both of these for quite sometime now)

    many thanks miniB

Many thanks miniB for you interesting comments i will give it a try, i have not yet come across IESpyad but i will give it a look.
The question also needs to be asked what is enough protection as you can't keep installing more and more software as a conflict is bound to arise.

Details about IESpyad & Install instructions The list adds sites to the 'Restricted Zone' of IE and is updated approx every month. I just use the reg.ad -uninstall and then .reg to install the updated list. It is not an extra program on your computer (which is one benefit) as it works as a reg-merge to the Retricted zone sites.

One thing you need to be aware of with IESpyad is the fact it can prohibit certain things when online. If you are trying to download or fill out a form (which you know you actually need or want) you may receive a notice 'your current security settings do not permit this' action or html based form. This is more than often a restriction imposed by IESpyad. You can easily find out by using the ads.uninstall.reg and trying again or look in your restricted sites and find if the one you are on is listed here. The site can then be deleted from this zone.

I had a problem filling out a magazine subscription from on a genuine magazine site and then discovered it was soemthing to do with IESpyad. I do not use Real Player but recently a problem was reported on a forum when the notice appeared about security settings not permitting this - I then tried it just to see and received the same warning. I checked out the list in my Retsricted zone and found *real was in there. The person who was trying to download Real Player had just installed IESpyad so we worked on this and discovered that after a little uninstall (test) the player could be downloaded without any problem.

I prefer to be kept safe but feel you may like to know this before you decide or at least know the answer if you see the alert ;)

I agree that there is a 'limit' to the amount of security employed without opening the way for conflict. I actually took stock of my security recently when doing a clean install and hope I have found the necessary programs to keep me safe. I have very definitely realised the first line of defense is to practise 'safe surfing' and after that my layers of security will look after anything I do not have control off when surfing. I hope I will not need to add to my layers apart from the necessary updates to the ones I have ;)
