Last week a friend brought me his laptop to clean up. Seems his wife was looking for a vacation setting and hit an infected web site and it was down hill from there. :(

Their McAfee suite had expired, so I uninstalled it (using McAfee's removal tool) and installed:

    AVG Free Anti-virus
    AdAware SE Personal
    Spybot S & D
    Zone Alarm Free firewall

The clean up went well, with the result being a total of 19 trojans locked away in the AVG virus vault.

Then, I ran Trend Micro's HouseCall online scan and discovered in the process that Spybot and HouseCall do not jeehaw. What happens is that HouseCall flags 98 Spybot files as something called Ad_Memwatcher, and then the system locks up when the user attempts to clean it. (That is the two-sentence summary of an hour Googling and reading).

The options seem to be to either uninstall Spybot, or skip the occasional scan with HouseCall.

Any thoughts on which approach is more prudent?
