I get this error when trying to install a simple printer that has been running for 2 years. The pc is brand new. HP printer AND HP computer. (Tech support has been trying to help for 3 days. Phone contact for 3 hours each. No satisifaction!!!)

Has any one had any Good Luck with this error.

The troubleshooting I have done is so extensive, there's no way I will sit and write them all down here. Hopefully someone will have experienced this problem and give more input...;(

Try replacing the file usbmon.dll in the system32 folder. It could be damaged/corrupted. There should be a copy in the windows\servicepackfiles\I386 folder of same size/date, else on the XP cd named usbmon.dl_ in the I386 folder.

Ummm.......just realized you said this is a new computer. Running XP?

Have you checked the values under the following registry key?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\USB Monitor

Should be a value of 'Driver' and data 'usbmon.dll'

Have a look in System Information>Components>Printing and USB. What's listed?

noahdfear: Thanks for the help. I got as far as replacing the usbmon.dll file, no difference.

The registry does not have a USB Monitor folder in the key you pointed me to: What it shows are: "HP Master Monitor" & "HP Standard TCP/IP Port" & "Local Port" & "Microsoft Document Imaging Writer Monitor" are the folders under the "Monitor" folder. (I call folder, may be called key---in the left pane.) In the HP Master Monitor "data" value (in right pane) is: HPBMMON.DLL

There are 15 devices in the System Information path. Those duplicate the USB Device Manager components.

Still no printer.....same error. Further advise is appreciated.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors and click the Monitors key to select it. Right click and select New>Key. Name it USB Monitor. Select the USB Monitor key, then right click in the right pane and select New>String Value. Name it Driver. Now double click the Driver entry and enter usbmon.dll for the value data. Click OK and close the editor, then reboot. Try installing again.

Hi Noahdfear--Me again....;) I'm such a happy camper--my printer works...;) Thanks again.

Different printer problem. (not the network one yet) This one is connected through the LPT port. Every boot "...found new hardware..." wizard pops up. I've performed all options at different boots and no matter which options are chosen, the result is, the printer works. The problem is the wizard constantly pops up.

    Ideas?

First, check for driver updates and install the latest. If the problem persists, copy the following command and paste it in the run line, then hit enter.

    regedit /e C:\lpt.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\LPTENUM "

Open Local Disk C: and locate lpt.txt, then post it's contents. I also need to know the make/model of the printer.
