    Hi All,

I have a real mystery on my hands and can't figure it out at all. I have Windows XP Professional on my desktop and I have 4 different user profiles. I am the administrator and the other three limited accounts.

I have had this set up for over one year and all has been fine - now out of the total blue there is no sound on the three other user profiles but I have sound on mine. I am able to play music from Kazza site and / or play a CD from the CD Rom. The others have absolutely no sound at all.

I have checked everything I can think of and am totally stumped.

Any ideas as to what is happening???

    Thanks in advance.

    Kazza site

If you have been using Kazaa you are riddled with spyware/malware because even though Kazaa is not, it invites a large number of baddies to invade your PC.

At a guess, the sound issue is simply the first thing you really noticed. I'd also bet the PC has been running slower than it should.

I'm moving this thread to the security section. Please say what spyware removal applications you use (if any) including the version number.

I don't think it has anything to do with spyware. I have had Kazza Lite for at least 2 years and everything has been running with no problems. I also have Ad-ware and I think it's version 6.0 which I run on a regular basis.

This sound mystery is totally different from a security issue and I think it would be nice if it were moved back to some location that perhaps someone can help me with it.

I am totally lost with this and need to know if anyone has experienced anything similar.

    Thanks.

    Hello Anne,

The other possibility is that a media player took over and in the process shut off sound for anything else.

Have you tried going into the Sounds and Audio Devices properties dialog:

Thru the control panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Volume tab > Advanced and in the Play Control dialog box, make sure nothing is muted.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

Yes, I have tried that and nothing is muted. As I mentioned the strange thing is that it's all the same machine just different profiles so why would it work on one profile and not the other three??

And the settings for all three other profiles are the same as mine and they can't even change them because they don't have administrator rights so the plot thickens!!!

Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

I am sure someone will suggest this when they get back to this thread, so I will go ahead and do it. Get HijackThis from the links in Newt's post and install. Then post a log for the experts to analyze.

    Bonjour Anne...

Even though Kazaa Lite is spyware free you can get some nasties (as suggested by Newt) by using the the software. It can't hurt to post a HJT log as Dan239 has suggested. This will eliminate one more reason why your having sound problems if the log is clean.

Well, Kazaa Lite is lots better than Kazaa. And you could well be right that critters are no part of your problem although if Ad-aware 6.0 is the only anti-spyware app you run I'd still bet on a pretty extensive infestation.

Still, it is your PC and since you prefer it, I'm moving the thread to the XP section. Several of the ideas posted while it was in the security area do look worth investigating.
