Installing SP3 using Windows update and it gets approximately halfway through, and then stops, and gives "Access Denied" message. Will go no further. I have tried a couple of things from MS Knowledge base, and no help. One of the things it suggested was to download SP3 and do an install that way, which I tried. No go either. One other note, IE7 as an update will not install either. It just appears to go through ok, and then shows in the results window as not installed. I am thinking that the two problems are the same cause, and wonder if there is anyone who has had this problem. Thanks for assistance.

The access denied error message could mean one of two things:

    1. You have an Anti Virus software running. It is recommended to first turn off the AV and try again
    2. Some of the registries do not have sufficient acl's . The installer runs as user (admin) and not as system. Some softwares upon installation go and change the acl's on registries so that admin cannot alter them.

First see if item 1 applies. If not we'll get to option two.

    SP Access denied errors

Thanks for prompt reply. Antivirus was turned off for one try and it made not difference. I am just upset as heck that MS releases an on line update that is going to require user to go into registry and make significant changes in order to do their work. Every thing that I have found so far, and the things I have tried so far, indicate that I will need to build a batch file, or a .cmd file, and run it to change access right levels in the registry. (that is unless someone else has a neat fix for this thing)

You should run that batch file (which isn't any big deal anyway):

    1. Backup your registry
    2. Download and install subinacl.exe
    3. Create a file called reset.cmd with Notepad. Copy the text below into the file reset.cmd and run reset.cmd from an account with administrative privileges (make sure the file is called reset.cmd not reset.cmd.txt):

Next, run Windows Update again to get SP3.

    SP3 Access denied

I finally decided that I had to go ahead and bite the bullet, and did run the batch file. SP3 then installed ok using windows update. Then when I went to run update after the SP3 install it would not run, giving error message that said it could not find null. To make a long story short, I downloaded IE7 and installed it successfully, and once it was installed, update worked. Hopefully I am about done with this pc. Thanks for all your assistance. Hope I can repay favor one day.
