Sounds like you have some bum system files on the PC that are causing troubles. Maybe need to get them fixed before trying the SP install.

Do you have a regular XP CD (not the SP but your original OS load) or one of those OEM 'recovery' things?

The 'Recovery CD' is what some OEM PC makers give you rather than a normal XP install CD. They are designed to set your PC back to the factory load and are worthless for repair work. Good that you have a normal XP CD.

Click on start, on run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    and click OK.

The system file checker will look for missing or bad system files and replace them. It may ask for the XP CD to use as a source for some replacement files - thus my question about your having one.

After that, start => run, key in cmd and OK. From the cmd prompt, key in
    Code:
    chkdsk /r
and press ENTER. Answer yes to the question about doing the disk scan at next boot then reboot.

Try your SP install after the above cleaning/repair work. Make sure you are trying to install from a CD or hard drive copy rather than over the internet.

If it still blows up, post the details.

thanks for all your help newt.. i really appreciate it.. heres an update. i followed your instructions and everything seemed to go well. i installed sp2 from my harddrive and then installed a program (this is all cause i got an ipod as a gift and in order to run itunes i had to have sp2 up and running).. so i installed itunes and it worked fine. i went to sleep and when i booted this morning i was gonna come here first thing and say thanks.. only thing is when i booted my desktop loaded but i couldnt click on anything. the icons loaded but nothing in the tool bar ran and when i hovered my mouse over the toolbar i got the hour glass. about 2 minutes later i got the windows program not responding window saying that sp2 wasnt working. the messages i got with it were:

    error signature:
    szAppName: update.exe szAppVer: 5.5.33.0 szModName: kernel32.dll
    szModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 offset: 00026bds

following files willb e included in this report:
    C:\Documen~1\sox\Locals~1\Temp\Wer9b50.dir00\update.exe
    C:\Documen~1\sox\Locals~1\Temp\Wer9b50.dir00\appcompat.txt

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as now im in a worse condition.. nothing works..

    thanks.

See if you can boot to Safe Mode and if so, drill down to the indicated Temp folder and delete the contents.

    That would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\sox\Localsettings\Temp\

After deleting the contents (files, sub-folders, all), reboot for effect.

If still no joy, boot to Safe Mode again and go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and Uninstall SP2. If it uninstalls clean, reboot to normal mode and reinstall SP2 but this time, shut down all non-necessary startup programs and disable your AV. It is sometimes easier to download the SP2 file from Windows Catalog site as opposed to doing it from a Net connection on the fly. Perhaps you did that already, now that I look back.

    Good luck.

thanks surferdude,, so heres what i did..

i deleted those files while in safemode. then i rebooted and got the same errors for the same files. which were now absent. so i uninstalled sp2. rebooted and now im here. my computer seems to be running fine.. itunes seems to work (even though supposedly you need sp2 to run it) the only thing is now i get this error every 30 seconds:

WMI has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    error signature:
    szAppName : wmiprvse.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.0 szModName : kernel32.dll
    szModVer : 5.1.2600.0 offset : 0000cd71

    C:\DOCUME~1\sox\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4D.tmp.dir00\wmiprvse.exe.mdmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\sox\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4D.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

so i dont know what to do really.. any suggestions?

    thanks.

I'd go ahead an re-install SP2 now and hope it gives the relief from the problem this time. Remember to shut down your AV and other running programs prior to loading SP2. I would also recommend that you run chkdsk and also check your drive for malwares with AdAware or SpyBot.

Most of the know problems with SP2 center around the drive having errors or malwares and the remainder are caused by certain AV programs.

    Good luck.
