    Any news on this problem??

SP2 killed my CD RW's ability
to burn or play music CDs.
Commercial data CDs are NOT read.

Homemade data CDs or MP3 CDs ARE read/played.

    No driver problems.
Playing with Firewall settings changes nothing.

Teac, the maker of the CD RW, has no news on this.

    I have tried un-installing SP2;
though SP2 created the problem, that didn't fix it.

(NOTE: SP2 erases all system restore points prior to its
    installation. That is not good!)

I am at the point of re-installing WinXP altogether, though
I think this must have to do with a few lines of registry text!

Not sure but maybe your codecs have gotten screwy. I would try this.

    1. Download and install the latest Media Player 10 from here

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...53-3759-40cf-80d5-cde4bbe07999&displaylang=en

    2. After installing MP10, install the MP codec pack from here (dont worry that it says its for MP9, it works fine in MP10 also, on my own PC).

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...b7-dcc9-466b-b0c4-04db144bb601&displaylang=en

    3. Uninstall and re-install any other CD burning software.

Let us know if it works or not, can try other things.

  3. to hide this advert.

    attempted these fixes

Thanks for this advice, but they didn't change anything.

I think the problem transcends any particular CD player/burner,
because a music or commerical data CD will simply
NOT REGISTER in the D-drive, and there are no error messages.

The CD RW simply spins feebly a time or two and stops.
Again, it will read MP3 Cds or homemade data CDs.

What is making the machine balk at reading commercial CDs?
It treats them as alien presences: this sounds like a Firewall problem,
but again, changing Firewall settings does nothing.
