During a recent service call to Gateway I was told that they have had many problems with SP2. Detailing any recent changes to the tech, I had mentioned that I had reverted to SP1 because Netscape and 1 or 2 other programs failed after the upgrade to SP2.

The tech indicated that they were not recommending doing the upgrade to SP2.

Has anyone heard of this? Are there cases of this with any other brands?

If this problem exists, and I shouldn't consider trying the upgrade again, is there any way to stop MS's notification of the SP2 being available.

    Hello Cal,

The tech indicated that they were not recommending doing the upgrade to SP2.
This may be true of older systems and individual techs, but no OEM would ship a system now W/O SP2.

is there any way to stop MS's notification of the SP2 being available.
I don't use AU, but if I remember correctly, there is an option to hide and ignore individual updates.

    Regards - Charles

I've had varying problems when upgrading to XP SP2.

One was on a Dell Laptop. All the hardware that was installed during the upgrade worked fine, but anything installed afterwards would not install correctly.

The other was an HP desktop where the firewall service was corrupted. I had to tweak a few registry settings to get it working.

From now on I always image before the upgrade and then verify all hardware and software still functions correctly which is a major undertaking :(
