During setup, after SP1 download, Message appeared:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf.
Make sure Cryptographic service is running on this computer ".

OK! What is Cryptographic service? How do I find it, detect if
it is running, turn it on if not running.?

    Computer is HP pavilion XT983.

I have no "update.inf" on my computer (SP1 already installed). Does the path indicate where it should be?
It is possible that the download went awry and that the xpsp1 file is corrupt.

Another person with the same problem was trying to install the update from Windows Update. If you downloaded the entire thing instead, it's properties should show it to be 140,440,152 bytes.
Many people have reported getting different sizes when downloading more than once. Check to see you have the full file size above.

I have five copies of my system, one each week, and none of the contain an update.inf file. That covers before and after sp1 install.

I suspect, as Abraxas has said, the download was flawed and the update.inf file is part of that download.

Posted message as New, now placed it where it should be:
Got rid of uninstalled updare (XP SP1).
Tried to to update SP1 (1.9mb) from Microsoft. Same results.
Next tried Windows BBS SP1 (133mb). Update failed.
Both times Update failed "Setup could not veritfy the integrity of
    the file Update.Inf ".
Emailed support-hp.com, reply was "the issue you are having
requires editing the Registy" call tech support for assistance with walk thru steps.
    Will call tonight or tomorrow.

That's good news! I have gotten very good support from HP on this box of mine.

    Good luck.
