Helping a friend try to get SP1 installed (W7, 64Bit, Build 7600). It indicates it is installing and then after just a few minutes it stops and says it has failed - Error Code 80073712. I have Googled this code looked at some of the other threads on this board and thought I would try to manually download to the Desktop http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5842 and install from there as suggested by Evan in HTipper's thread.

However, there are 4 different downloads for this particular Build. Each one is described at the bottom of the page but I'm not sure how to tell which one I should download. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

I have added the descriptions below:

How are you doing the install? Doing it with Windows Updates is the best way. It will find what it needs and do it. In IE, go to Tools/Windows Update. Then in the next window, click on Check for updates on the left side pane.

Hi Robert. The download version that you want to get in the link is this one, windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe.

When you download it make sure that you save the file to your desktop. When you are ready to install it make sure you shut down any background programs that are running in the system tray and hopefully SP1 will be able to install properly.

    Thanks MrBill and Evan,

I tried installing via the automatic updates a couple of times and both failed. I downloaded the SP1 executable - it appeared to be working but after about 30 minutes or so it failed. I downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool and then tried the automatic download one more time and that failed.

The friend's son came on the scene and he made a couple of attempts and they contacted Dell who has scheduled a W7 reinstall. I have cautioned the friend to back up all data and be prepared to reinstall all programs that she previously installed.

I will mark this one Resolved. If anything of consequence occurs, I will update.
