I downloaded the SP2 today to my Desktop, made a CD copy to save.

When I try to install the updates from the Desktop I get the error listed below

    C:\DOCUME~1Mudd\Desktop\WINDOW~1.EXE.
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
    CS:0000 IP:0120 CP:ee ad 00 f0ee Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

So, I go to the CD and double click the icon and it begans to extract files. The progress bar get to 3% and that's it. Minutes, probably hours later it is still at 3/%.

The download was 266MB. Could it be that something didn't make it through? I downloaded it from a Microsoft Page.

Mudd - why not wait a couple of days for the consumer release of SP2? Will be smaller and less likely to give you problems.

But if you absolutely, positively gotta have the thing today, you might want to download the one from Here. Size is 272391 KB.

That's the page I got if from! Found it on Wilders Security. No hurry, just a little anxious to try it.

    I'll wait. Thank you. :D

    Don't do that!

Save it to a directory (folder) other then the desktop.

And by that do you mean in the Root System, by making a folder specifically for the SP2?

Yes, either in a special made folder, or for example in the "My Documents" folder... whatever you prefer, anything but the desktop ;)

Thanks for the advice Arie. I always save downloads to my desktop. I'll put it in a different folder, if I get it...

To keep the paths short and the total number of characters in the pathname to a minimum, rename the file to "xpsp2.exe ". It worked fine with that name for slipstreaming, but in folders in the root.

I don't believe there will be any other full version coming out, though that is what MS implied. They are simply referring to the express installation. I'd rather have the whole thing so it can be used on any computer.
