Since I reinstalled Vista this morning, my Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio has given me trouble. Everything sounds hugely tinny and the Volume Control (and other Creative utilities) simply refuse to work with the card, stating that "this device is not supported" or something similar to that - despite being the correct utilities and recognizing the card itself. I've turned the subwoofer up and it makes no difference, and if I change any settings in the Creative utilties, they revert to the defaults immediately.

I tried updating the drivers. I tried removing and reinstalling the drivers, and yet have had no joy. Any ideas?

Hi Lukeno1. Did you look in Device Manager and see any errors next to your Soundcard device?

Is the soundcard integrated onto the motherboard or are you using a PCI Sound Card?

There are no errors, and the Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio is not an integrated solution - and my integrated solution is not 5.1 capable.

    The exact error is:

"The current selected audio device is not supported by the application. Do you want to select another audio device now? "

Did you disable the onboard audio device in your motherboards BIOS?

In Device Manager< Sound, video, and game controlles does it list the proper sound device?

I would also open up the case and reseat the card to make sure that its installed properly.

I've tried reseating the card, the proper sound device is indeed listed. I haven't disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS at any point (due to the card working fine before the reinstall), so that'll be the next thing to try.

Disabling the onboard sound has made no difference.

If you click Start< Control Panel< Hardware and Sound< Sound, on the Playback and Recording Tabs is your Sound Device listed and being used as the default sound device?

Yes, it is. I've tried setting it to that, and to the speakers - makes no difference.

Did you install the chipset drivers for your motherboard?

Have you tried installing the sound card into a different PCI slot on the motherboard?

Not at present, I will swap it into the other PCI slot on the board.

Ok go ahead and try that out and see if that makes any difference. Clearly there is some problem with the card being recognized by the drivers in Windows.

If changing the card into the other PCI slot doesn't work and you have already tried installing the latest drivers from the Creative website then I don't know what else to suggest to get the sound card to work.

I've given up on the sound card and have ordered an Asus Xonar as a replacement. I didn't try it in another PCI port, but oh well.

Yeah chances are that the sound card has some type of hardware problem if the drivers didn't recognize the card properly. Hopefully your replacement sound card works properly when its installed.

I'll report back if I can get the Soundblaster to work in another one of my machines.

Still have no idea if that sound card works - it doesn't appear to have Win2K drivers (or at least, not proper ones). My new ASUS card is in and far superior, so I'm happy.
