have winxp home edition with gigabyte ultra pro titan 667 series. board, run netscape 7.0 have plus for xp installed also. Installed java from internet. Was playing at a site called free sim slots and sound just quit. Now I have sound on russian squares, hyperbowl and labyrinth. Nothing on other games like 123 solitaire etc. internet sites and some email. I have uninstalled and reinstalled avance '97 3x then I went to net and downloaded new drivers for such and reinstalled again. Nothing. Any clues? Thank you

thanks for replying. I went all over that site, but I'm to illiterate for that. I have sound in media player and speaker test but not when I run the directx test get a message for error in line 19 or something like that so I reinstalled direct x also when I reinstalled my sound for motherboard. No luck there. No sounds for any of my games like 123 SOLITAIRE or spider solitaire etc. But have sound in hyperbowl and russian squares which are also microsoft games. Someone told me I have to do a new reinstall and I am not able to do that, so guess I am just without sound for most games and internet sites and cd player.

    Hi clo.

First off - I don't think you will need to reinstall your OS. That should be an absolute last resort but some folks seem to recommend it as a first resort.

A thing to try - and if it doesn't help, post back.

Open Control Panel and then Sounds & Audio Devices. Click on the Sounds tab and scroll down to see if your problem children are listed. The "system" items certainly should be. Check to make sure there is a sound associated with each and if there isn't, add one.

Note: The instructions I gave are for a "classic" view control panel so yours might not have the exact wording I mentioned but the sound section should be there somewhere.

Grandma here is really dumber than a post. I don't understand who the problem children are. In control panel under sounds and audio device properties are:
sound scheme (its windows default) then save as or delete.
To change sounds click a program event then select a sound to apply. You can save the change as a new sound scheme.(I've never had a scheme, its always been windows default) then its program events with a list under each event a mile long, then its another drop down menu with sounds as the header with ALL the events and after each is wav. So where am I at here? I have xp plus here should I take it out? Thanks C

clo - I'm sorta guessing that somehow the sounds that go along with certain events just went missing.

You are on the right page so if you scroll down the list and see events without associated sounds, you can easily add the ones you want. Or remove sounds from places where you don't want. For instance, I hate to have the thing ding and sing to me when I log on or off and have set those to have no sounds.

If you make changes you can just leave the sound scheme thing at blank or default. The option to name a scheme is for folks who may want more than one option so that you could have, for instance
scream-at-clo and shutup-stupid-pc and pick which ever one suited you on a given day.

Thus speaks a grandfather of 10.75 as of today. :D
