    Hi All.

    Frst some System info:

    E-machine, AMD 2000, Windows XP
    Sound driver is Realtek AC97
Modem is Conexant Soft K 56
    Scanner is HP p5

About 2 weeks ago, I asked for help with my sound icon not showing up and I would have no sound. The advice given was to uninstall and reinstall the driver or look for a new driver and install that one. I did and at first I had it working, but only for a day.

The scanner, as you may know, is a couple of years old, but is working fine. The only problem was that it came with its own ISA-SCSI card and the new systems don’t have an ISA slot anymore. So I had to buy a USB-SCSI cable and the scanner works. I have to turn the scanner on when I boot up, so the system will recognize it as present. If I don’t, I can not use the scanner unless I reboot.

When I boot up, and have the scanner on, I will get an usb icon for the scanner and also I will get my sound icon and have sound, but now my modem will disconnect me and only go up to 44k, sometimes only 28k.

If I boot without the scanner, my modem works fine, but I have no speaker icon and no sound unless I reboot again. Then I have sound and a modem that works, but no scanner.

I hope I explained it so you can understand what I am talking about.
Do I have 1 problem, or are they separate problems?
    Any advice?
    Sven

Hi Sven - perfectly clear :)

Looks like you have a conflict somewhere.

Go Start > Run > type in msinfo32.exe > OK

When Systen Information opens go to Hardware Resources > Conflicts/Sharing.

See if any conflicts are reported and post them here.

    Hi PeteC

    Thanks for your post.
I rechecked the readout with the scanner on and off
and it is the same, No changes a all.

Just this morning when I booted up with the scanner on, I got
My sound icon and sound. I logged on to your BB and I was dropped within A minute.
I checked the readout and then rebooted without the scanner and checked again. No changes. Now of cause I have my sound icon, because I always have it on the second boot. I will now go back online and find out how long it will take to get kicked off.

The first log on failed completely and the 2nd and 3rd logon lasted about a minute. To tell you what I think, I need a new modem, what do you think?

    Any ideas?
    Sven

This is perfectly normal for an SCSI device like a scanner.

I doubt if your modem is faulty - check it by going to Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems > Properties > Diagnostics > Query Modem.

There is a conflict somewhere - definitely something not right with the sound. I am not familiar with USB > SCSI converters.

This needs some thought, but I would suggest the standard answer which cures many problems - clean out any spyware/malware.....

Download Spybot and Ad-aware , update their reference files and run Spybot before Ad-aware - delete all they find.

Also download and run Cwshredder - download at the bottom of the page under 'Epilogue'.

None of these will harm your machine and will clean out any spyware present and may - possibly - solve some problems.

    Hi PeteC

After being kicked off several times before I could read your last post, I am now downloading all 3 programs that you recommended. I also started just browsing the web and I am on line now for more than an hour without any interruptions. I have no idea why. Do you?
I will post back after I run those programs and let you know if they found anything.

    Hi PeteC,

    Sven Again,

I have run all 3 programs and Spybot found 15 files and reg entry’s
And quarantined them before deleting them.

Ad-Aware found 54 files and did the same. So I can undo what I did if needed.
Cwchredder did not find any bad files.

While I am typing this, I am on line and have not been kicked off.
I sure hope this was the problem.

    Thanks for your help.

    Sven,

I can't help on the problem you posted, but I do have a question about using the HP 5P on Windows XP system. Are you able to use Paperport to launch your scanner software? I've had problems doing this. All other applications launch Desckscan or PrecisionScan without any problems.

    Thanks
