You need to installthe chipset drivers that came with the pc or motherboard.

first check to see in the device manager if your sound devices are installed.
If they are installed they should be listed , no exclamation or question marks and say device is working properly.
It may be that your volume is simply muted in the controls.
If not you will have to install the device drivers for that device.
If you have a disk that came with the computer then your life is somewhat easier or perhaps you can go to the manufacturer of the computer ( say and HP) and find it there.
If not you may be able to determine the model of the card by physical examination or be a utility such as Belarc:

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

there also was a very good program called Aida32 which was discontinued.
If it is an older computer this would be usefull as well but you will have to hunt for the program.

Once you have determined the sound card you will have to find the driver.
You can check at www.driverguide.com which is a library of drivers.
You may have to try several diffirent versions before you are set up.
