My sound is distorted. I have checked connections, etc. and run sound tests and I get messages that there are no conflicts and that all is working ok, but the sound remains distorted. Could it be the sound card? Any suggestions for finding the problem?

    Thanks,

    Marvin

It could be, have you run Dxdiag.Exe? It is a DirectX diagnostic that can do some tests on your sound card.
Start\Run, type in Dxdiag and press Enter.

Drivers and conflicts are important to check, but there are other possible trouble areas.

Which of these is true for you:
    1. Get distortion when playing anything
    2. Get distortion when playing audio files I recorded, but not those I downloaded

    For both cases:
    a. Use high quality speakers or headphones
    b. If using a $10 ISA card, get a better sound card
    c. Turn down the volume in your software and back up on the speakers (if they have a volume control)
    d. Cables should be in good condtion and not too long

    If you picked #2 above:
    a. Is your input source undistorted?
    b. Are microphones placed and used correctly?
    c. Does the microphone need a new battery?
    d. Watch the input level meter in your recorder software, and adjust level as needed

Thanks for the info. The distortion is with all sounds and is bad. I have a Turtle Beach Montergo II Sound Card on a Dell 450 Pent. II, with Win98. Sound was great until last night when I booted up the windows greeting was distorted and I check several other sources for sound and they were all distorted. I checked all wire connections and all sound functions and it reports working correctly. I did the troubleshooting with my sound software and did not pick up anything. I will try Dxdiag.exe when I get home this PM.

    Drivers gone South ( Sour/Bad ).

You have a DEll machine so I can't really say how to remove and reinstall the audio.

Were you doing anything hardware wise before the audio went bad.

Re-checked all of the speaker connections. Unpluged and re-pluged them. I reinstalled the audio drivers and as of now the speakers are working ok. Thanks to all for the information.
