    HELLO:
    Windows 98SE 'puter
the Creative Labs "Sound Blaster" card quit working(may be Audigy model)it is 3 years old
The Aopen MS691 speakers work. I tried them on this XP 'Puter.
    Which would you try first??
removing & reloading drivers(we have CD) or
mechanically unplug sound card from motherboard and reinstall it..

If you have the volume control icon in the lower right hand corner - double check that the vol is up and that the Mute box isn't checked.

    Hi MIR11,
If it seemed to "drop out" when you added the modem card, there may be a resource conflict. Look in Device Manager for any problems listed, but it could be a problem with the allocation of resources by the BIOS at startup.

I would try taking the modem card back out again, test the audio without it, then you can replace it (the drivers will be automatically reinstalled).

If the audio card works without the modem card present, you should change the position of the card/s in the PCI slots, this will make the BIOS allocate a different set of resources for them.

It is recommended that audio cards and modems be placed in the slots furthest from the CPU, that is, close to the edge of the motherboard.

i BELIEVE IT DROPPED OUT LONG AGO.it worked 3 years ago when i installed it,about a year later 'puter(and owner) moved 18 miles to Vero Beach to an apartment, then later to a house, and later to an assisted living facility.Owner never mentioned it until Modem Quit.

I really do not want to mess with Modem card that is working; especially with all the grief we had with it.....
Audio card is at the bottom of the Tower, Modem right above it...

No, that's fine. Don't touch the modem if it does not appear to be part of the problem.

From my dealings with Creative cards, it could be important to have the original drivers disk if you want to try resetting the drivers, but I suppose if you haven't got the disk, you can only still try.

Expecting it is a driver problem, I would first try running the original drivers/software installation. No disk, identify the card correctly and get the drivers from the Creative website (Everest in my signature should be able to identify it) if the original drivers are still there and the set of a wrong model have been installed. This is the same as when the modem was not being listed correctly (56K standard modem). Try Start -> Run and enter dxdiag, this will have information under the Sound tab. Take the card out and look for the model number on it, like you did with the modem.

In Device Manager -> Sound...Controllers, right-click on the listing for the main controller and select Properties -> Drivers tab, click the Update Drivers button, then the "Display a list of all drivers..." radio button. Make a note of the listings on the next page, if there are Creative/Soundblaster listings in the box, you could try selecting one of those.

After that I would try (going to Safe Mode again) and uninstalling the main controller under multimedia/sound heading (if there are long lists of the same controller, uninstall them all). Try the other other suggestions first though and let us know if they are not successful.

Look in Add/Remove Programs, if there are third party media players, for example, Real Player or Winamp, you could uninstall those. Windows Media Player and the Creative(Soundblaster) player/sound manager should be OK, but I would uninstall others.

Gathering information and collecting drivers will be your first step.

    THANKS
You suggest going into Safe Mode.
I really don't know how to do that, and occasionally when it went into safe mode, i really had to deal with it step by step to get out of safe mode

    Safe Mode,
At startup you will see a "splash screen" or black and white DOS type screens before Windows starts loading. Just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key rapidly. [If the computer gives one beep at startup, this is the time when you need to tap the F8 key].

You can only do simple tasks in Safe Mode. In Win 98 safe mode there is no CD drive support (there is in Win XP safe mode). Safe mode is a good way of uninstalling drivers or corrupt programs because higher level drivers are not loaded and startup/background programs are not running.

    to all
I intend to go over to that 'puter in about 2 hours with a pair of headphones.
    headphones also are stereo.
The Aopen MS691 powered speakers worked on this XP 'Puter. they are 4-5 years old. i wonder if they are stereo and the puter is mono???

there is a small (2') speaker in the tower, is that just for hearing the modem buzz or what???
There is no speaker in monitor like my monitor here(but i like the quiet and keep it turned off until i need it)

i mostly am going to get model # of sound card; because i e-mailed Creative Labs and they asked for it...
yes i will ask you guys and them and Aopen cause i really want to fix it and then forget it....

I WENT THERE EARLIER TODAY to get card number(CT 4740),and re-install drivers from original disc.First page choose language/English, second page
    3 choices
install Sound Blaster PCI software (checked it)
install InnoMedia Buddy Talk (don't know if need this,so did not check it

    HELLO ALL;
IN POST # 6 Mattman said

Try Start->Run and enter dxdiag, this will have information under the Sound tab. Take the card out and look for the model number on it, like you did with the modem.

In Device Manager -> Sound...Controllers, right-click on the listing for the main controller and select Properties -> Drivers tab, click the Update Drivers button

    There WERE NO CONTROLLERS LISTED.

    4. if downloaded to a Temporary Folder then asked what program do you want to use to open and accidently/stupidly chose WordPad, how get it installed from there??
5 .p/s Creative Labs has refurbished(with software) for $15.99 + shipping; i wonder if that is not a better choice!!!!!

I have the original disk for the Creative (Soundblaster) card that I have, so I have not needed to use drivers from the Creative website.

The download files I can see at Creative are .exe files, they may be a self-extracting set of zip/compressed files or an installation program. For compressed files, you will need to decompress them to a folder and find a set of instructions for installation. An installation program will guide you step by step.

As I said, it is probably an .exe file and you won't need a program to open it. If it is a .zip or .rar file, it is a compression file, you can find programs to open them (Winzip, Freezip, 7Zip). Check back on the information I gave you in your thread about the modem.

Try installing the drivers first. If unsuccessful, think about getting another card. From my experience with Creative cards, they require having the original drivers CD. I suppose the drivers they sent you should work, you will need to try them.

That CT**** number is from the card, you might need to relate it back to something like a Soundblaster Live or Soundblaster Live Value model.

    Matt
PS Under the Sound heading the Creative "controller" will probably be listed as some sort of SoundBlaster device. dxdiag will have a listing of the sound controller and other sound related devices.
