I can sort the "All Programs" program list but have been unsuccessful in sorting the links in the first column of the Start Menu. Is there a way?

I assume you mean the "frequently used programs list ", the most left side portion of the Start menu?

If so, no you can't sort that. The more frequent you use a program, it will be put closer to the top.

However, the upper section of the left column can be manually sorted by dragging up/down.

If there are programs in the lower section of the left column (i.e., your frequently used programs list) that you'd like to put in the upper section, you can drag them up to the upper section and put them where you wish.

If you accidentally put one you don't want in the upper section or you later decide you don't want it there, you can right-click on it and then select "Remove from This List. "

    Hi, chuckmg.

    I'm glad I could help! :)

That sorting issue used to bug me for a long time too and I happened to discover it during my tinkering.

You can also drag copies of application links (folders or individual programs) directly from your "All Programs" list to the upper section of the Start menu's left column via the same method. (The original item will remain in the "All Programs" list.)

I put copies of my "System Restore" and "Windows Update" links there, for example.
