I have some software that won't run for more than 15 seconds without unexpectedly quitting. The manufacturer is no help, and I know the software runs on other computers, so it is my system configuration.

I started windows in safemode and the softwware worked great. So how can I go about finding the cause to my woes. I am a mac person who has switched over and I am not very experienced at windows xp trouble shooting. Is there an conflict catching software?

    Thanks

    Soren

If it runs in safe mode, then something else loading with "normal" mode is causing problems. Do start~run~msconfig and try the "diagnostic startup ". If it works then, back to msconfig and the startup tab and uncheck (temporarily disable) everything there. If the app runs like that, begin adding things back to startup one at a time and figure out which is causing the problem. Then post back with the answer.

Also, check your event logs. They will often give you enough information to either figure out the problem or to find a Microsoft Support article describing the problem and giving a fix.

    thanks so much

this is the tool I've been looking for! on a mac its a bit easier to find info on this kind of thing. I searched the web for this kind of tool and you are the first to mention it to me, much thanks.

anyway it wasn;t in the startup stuff , but I narrowed it down to a couple of services that I didn't recognize. now how do I permenantly erase these mystery services?

msconfig is inaluable and I didn't know it existed.

    Thanks again

There's no way I know of to permanently erase services (other than third part services installed as part of software packages), because these are handled by the OS, however you can disable services and choose whether or not to autostart.

You can find the control panel for handling the services by Right Clicking on My Computer and choosing Manage from the context menu, they are (of course) the Services item under the Services and Applications heading.

However you should not go about disabling services without reading up on them first, as some of them are vital to the OS.

You can take a look here, here and possibly here. There was another site I wanted to show you, but I'm unable to find it now, sorry.
