When I was using WinXP I could sort and position my files and photos in any order I wanted by dragging and dropping them where I wanted them to go. I did that by unchoosing Auto Arrange.

In Windows 7 it seems there is no way to do that. There are lots of sort methods, but no way to do it the way I want. For example, I've taken pictures of my bathroom reno. One picture is called "Closet Before" and another is called "Closet After ". Both very descriptive but Windows insists on putting Closet After before Closet Before.

This is extremely irritating and I would really appreciate so help with this. I have files that I would also like to arrange according to a method logical to how they are used, but because of the names, they are always where I don't want them to be.

    Rename them:
    01 Closet Before
    02 Closet After
    ?

Thanks for the suggestion, but this doesn't solve my issue. It was possible to disable auto arrange (files pictures etc) in Win XP and I could arrange them any way I wanted to without relabelling them.

I used the picture scenario as an example. I'm more interested in arranging my documents in ways that make sense to me - IE, how I use them.

    Thanks for your reply.

I will have a look at your link, but this is not necessarily about photos only, I used them as an example of how Windows orders files. I really want the ability to arrange the files I use in ways that make sense for the way they are used - ie the ones I use most often in a particular order.

I looked at the link, and it does not address the question I asked, which is how can I disable Auto Arrange.

    You could try this:
    from Dave Bishop here

Auto arrange Windows 7 desktop bug solved....if you happen to have it. Warning when changing your registry - please be careful as wrongly doing so may damage your system.

In reply to your last question, How to disable Auto Arrange.

    best regards,
