I have multiple e-mail Internet accounts in MS Outlook Express 6. Is it possible to alphabetically sort these accounts in the Outlook Express 6 New Message, drop-down, "From" window? This is the window you get when you click to write a new message.

Hi Smug - welcome to the board :)

Yup - right click on the Account header in the message pane - Sort Ascending, Sort Descending

There is a bar above your messages. This is the bar that says who the message is from, date received and so on. Right click on that bar and choose columns. Put a check in Account and click okay. Now on the bar you should see a listing for account. You can click on the word account or any other word on the bar and sort the columns.

    Hi PeteC and Sunny,
Thanks for the feedback. I guess I did not make myself clear. I am trying to sort my e-mail account addresses in the Outlook Express New Message "From" window? There is a drop-down box but no way to sort my addresses as they appear in the drop-down box. Smug

    Hello Smug - This is J. M.
I have OE6, but I can't find the drop down "From" window you are referring to...But then again, I only have one POP e-mail account. Do you have more than one e-mail provider, (ie JUNO, Yahoo?)

Smug I know what you mean :(

I have 22 listed myself, they are listed top to bottom in the way they are added, the last one added at the bottom. Haven't found a way to sort them.

    Hi J.M. & Arie,

Thank you both for your responses. After literally years of working on this I think it is a lost cause. The way the accounts are set up in the registry does not make it feasible to sort it there either. Cheers, Smug

The accounts in that new message drop down list are listed in the same order they're listed in the Tools>Accounts list. Those are also listed alphabetically but those you can name anything you want. In the drop-down list, they're displayed with address first, account name in parentheses beside that.

So, to sort them the way I want them, I designate them in the Tools>Accounts list by letter...the one I want displayed first, for example, is named "A" followed by the name of the account, the second is "B" followed by the name of the account and so on.

The change will be reflected in the new message drop down list.

    Hi Miz,

Thanks for your reply. I have no problem sorting the accounts in my Tools/Accounts list. I can just click on the top of the Account column for that. In my OE-6 that does not translate over to a sort in the New Message "From" line drop-down list. Thanks again for looking at it and offering a possible solution. If I am misinterpreting something you are saying please help. Smug

No, if you just sort them by clicking on that button, the change will not carry over. You have to force them to sort alphabetically by adding the appropriate letter in front of each account name. That's the only thing I've found that will carry over to the new message drop-down list.

    Hi Miz,

I tried that, even closed OE and rebooted, still my "From" account addresses do not sort alphabetically in the new message drop down box...they remain in the order they were entered. Smug:mad:
