    What does this mean:

Error launching browser window: No XBL binding for browser.

Get this message when I tried to launch NS7 and after AFTER I downloaded and upgraded to IE 6.
    Isn't that specious?

All these browsers and none of them works compatible with all sites. It's a mess.

After posting this message I uninstalled NS7 -- for the 100th time -- and reinstalled. Everything seems to be fine. Perhaps this happened because I upgraded to IE 6 which bumped into NS7 during the download?

    Hi Sal_gal,

That error is usually associated with a Theme, and most frequently occurs with the Toy Factory Theme. Best to revert to the default theme (Modern).

MS definitely does not goes out of its way to make IE compatible with Netscape. MS specious? Surely you jest! ;)

    What's a Theme?

Everything's working now, but boy oh boy, the trials and tribs of trying to get a 100% working browser that won't crash and give you error messgs.

Themes are the appearance, or skin, of the browser. See HERE for examples.

    Themes can be applied in:
    Edit|Preferences|Appearance|Themes

    Hello Ramona-

I've been reading these posts on the XBL binding error but it hasn't helped me yet; my Mozilla FireFox browser doesn't get past the "XBL binding error" pop-up window in that it doesn't load at all, and so I am unable to change the theme (I believe I had downloaded the theme "smoke ", enabled it, and the browser promptly crashed). I've looked in the remaining folders (have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, with the same result) for the theme to remove but have so far had no fortune. I'm running winXP, mozilla 1.7 works fine, as does IE (which I only use if I must, for windows updates and some FTP). Can you (or others who have suggestions) please help me? I'd like to be able to run FireFox again.

    Thank you!

That was quite helpful, Paul; I found the Phoenix folder and renamed the chrome file but FireFox still wouldn't run, so I looked for more chrome files to rename (looking in the other mozilla folders), found two more and renamed them, and now FireFox opens and runs to the point where I'm able to post this reply. I see a new chrome.rdf has been created in one of the folders but not in the other two, so I'll change those others back and see what happens. Thanks again-

N/p, phaedruswolfe. I love FF and T-bird, and am more than happy to help out a fellow FFian. ;)

Now they did make a change with 0.9 (or is it only with 0.9.1?)--a new proflie folder has been set up. The profile folder (in the application data files) is now going to be Firefox (as opposed to Moz/Phoenix, which it was up through 0.8). After a few more days of cruising with 0.9.1. (just d/led it last night), I'll rename Moz/Pheonix and then delete it. But I have just heard way too many complaints about 0.9 and 0.9.1 so I'm going to take my time on this one. I deleted 0.8 (prog files, not the application data folders) and so far, 0.9.1 is working smoothly enough.

Is it generally a good idea to rename files associated with applications before deleting them?

Funny thing happened after I changed all the "chrome.rdf" names to something slightly different all of the bookmarks I'd made in Mozilla 1.7 vanished, and each time I open the application I get a prompt asking which profile I'd like to use (it hadn't done this before, and I've since changed back all the chromes except for the FireFox one, which has a new chrome.rdf file). Not a big loss, just odd.

FireFox 0.9 seems to be working just fine, though I can't say I put it under much stress. I think I'll leave the themes alone for awhile, but I'll certainly keep in mind the fix you suggested in case I decide to tinker again.

As far as renaming them, its basically like how some AV programs will "quarantine" files instead of outright deleting them. Renaming something means that programs/links will no longer be able to use the folder, although by changing the name back again (in case something goofs up), you can restore it to normal. With Firefox being so touchy, I'd rather rename and then delete a week later. :(

I can say that I didn't care much for the default 0.9.1 theme, so I went to http://www.tom-cat.com/mozilla/ (its not listed in texturizer or mozdev) to get the Mostly Crystal theme. We've been using it since 0.7 or so and we like the icons.

As far as tinkering with preferences/profiles, I just do it when I have to (like per instructions on that XBL binding error). Other than that, I just leave them where they are from upgrade to upgrade, and I get no problems.
