    Hi all!

This is the second time that I, in Explorer, notice that something has changed my drive labels. They were Local disk C:, Local disk D: and Local disk E:. Suddenly they appear as Local disk C:, LOCAL DISK D: and Local disk E:.
On the other occasion it was the C: label that got all CAPs.

For other reasons, I restored using my Ghost Image between the two occasions.
I can´t remember having installed anything that could cause this and I see no connection between the two.

As far as I can tell, something has been writing to the MBR but does anyone know what might be the culprit?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

Do you mean "Local Disk" in My Computer, vs the Volume Labels for the hard drive?
    Housecall, online AV scan
About the only thing that would write to the MBR on a fully installed and functional OS would be a virus.
However, this wouldn't change the Volume Label on the drive partition(s). What do you see for the drives in Windows Explorer?

    Hi markp62,
    thanks for Your reply!

When I formated my three partitions, I chose to not give them a label. In Windows Explorer they showed up with a default name, Local disk ( C: ), Local disk ( D: ) and Local disk ( E: ). When I right-clicked the respective partition to view its properties, the label was empty.
Now, there is still no label for for C: and E: but for D: it reads "LOCAL DISK" in CAPs.

Norton Anti Virus warns for anything that tries to write to the MBR, even when I changed the label back on the previous occasion.
I wonder if NAV warns if itself tries to write to the MBR?

    Christer

Forgot to mention that NAV has caught all virii and I´ve had a housecall too!

I wouldn't know if Norton would warn it itself did it. I use AVG, and it says nothing if I change the Label. This Local Disk thing must be a ME quirk.

Yes it does and it should. If the proper command is in the Autoexec.bat.

Now that you mention it that just might be the problem. You may have Norton set to inoculate the MBR and nothing can write to it.

I had similiar problems in SE until I took Norton off of the MBR.

    Thanks guys,
    for Your input!

This was probably my last WinME question, I´m in the process of installing WinXP. If this "label-thing" is a ME quirk, then I should see no more of it.

    Fingers crossed ......
