I just re-built my sister's computer and installed Win XP SP2 instead of SP1 and now some programs that installed OK in SP1 will no longer install in SP2 while other programs install OK.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?

I tried checking the SP2 Support Center, but had no luck there.

It seems to be a problem associated with some versions of a program's installer... the usual error message I see (if I even get one) is "can't find the RPC Server ".:)

Check by running services.msc from the Run window and verifying that Remote Procedure Call is running. It should be set to Automatic. The Remote Procedure Call Locator can be set to Manual.

If both are set properly, consider downloading the latest XP updates since there is a new version of Windows Installer in the latest batch.

I downloaded the Installer 3.1 that's in the Windows Update and when I go visit my sister in two weeks I'll see if that has any effect... no internet access for her so quick fixes are sort of hobbled in that respect since it's a 5 hr drive.

If the RPC service isn't running Windows won't work at all BTW, so the RPC Server eror message I see, I suspect, is something in installer programs that tells Windows what to do when installing programs.

For some programs the install process starts and then just hangs up until the error message comes up.... just bizarre since these programs install fine in SP 1, serves me right for trying to save my sister from having to install the SP 2 update into SP 1.:)

There are MANY apps that install and run in SP1that do not install in SP2. Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 is one for example. What specific apps won't install?

For some reason WinZip 9 wouldn't install, I also got the list from my sister--- 3D Home Designer and Create a Card by Broderbund, Art Explosion by Nova Development Corp. and Print perfect by Cosmi.

I'm going to visit their websites to see if they have any fixes, luckily my sister is visiting her daughter near here this weekend, so I'put the updated Windows Installer 3.1 on a thumb drive to take back and try... hopefully that will cure this problem.:)
