Some of my local folders do not show in Outlook Express 6 now. They are still listed as DBX files in C:\Documents and Settings\Jim LeMaster\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{832E3DB9-1E95-421A-BBC2-127B198916C7}\Microsoft\Outlook Express on drive C but only some of them show up now. I tried to import them but it tells me that an application has them in use. That would be Outlook Express. Can anyone help me with a fix. There are many of my wifes family e-mails from relatives, etc. in there. I mistakenly thought that moving them to the local folders would keep them safe. They have been in there for a couple of years now with no problems. I used to have about 20 local folders with all the e-mails sorted and now I have only 8. Some of them are defaults but some of them are ones I created just like the ones that are missing. Please help!

For a start try re-registering OE and it's associated library files as outlined in An Outlook Express Basic Repair Kit This may not solve the problem, but worth doing.

How large are those folders which fail to show? OE has a limit of 2GB and starts to play funny long before that size is reached. Ideally folder size should be restricted to a few 100 Mb at most.

There is the possibility that the folders are corrupted in which case you will need to use a program like DBXtract to recover the contents.
You did right there, but the folders remain vulnerable. The safest way is to maintain a backup of the .dbx files on a separate drive or burn to CD. I moved my Message Store to another drive which is backed up hourly to yet another drive and weekly to an external drive. The location of the Message Store can be specified in Tools > Options > Maintenance tab - Store Folder.

    Many Thanks

I will give these a go and see what I can salvage,
