    Using Win 98 SE.

Why is it that when I apply/remove the Read-only attribute on folders, it is not inherited by files (in various levels) contained therein? I know this is an explicit feature in W2K and XP, where I am actually asked if I need permissions filtered down.

And why is it when I apply Thumbnail View to folders, this attribute is not inherited by folders in the next level or lower?

Is there a way I can change this?

What are desktop.ini and thumbs.db files that magically appear out of nowhere?

    TIA.

On your first point - Pass :)

Thumbnail view - set up a folder as you want it to display, then Tools > Folder Options > View > Folder Views > Apply to all Folders. I'm on XP at the moment - think it is basically the same in 98.

Desktop.ini is the information file for your desktop display - in this case folder view.

Thumbs.db is the database of the thumbnails you asked to be displayed - used to speed up the display of thumbnails.

Win98 uses the DOS attribute (attrib) command which is not
recursive unless you specify the parameter in a Run box.
See StartMenu/Run and type attrib /?

Thanks to both of your very helpful posts. I learn something new every day.

This means I better not keep deleting the Thumbs.db file:)

    Regards.
