rockgitarplaya - welcome to the forum. As stated in the forum Posting Rules you need to use a meaningful title for your topic. Since you are new, I just changed this one for you. Newt

Internet Explorer will not open but all other programs run as far as i know. and sometimes when i load a web page through AOL the page comes up as random letters. Sounds very much like the result of spyware/malware or possibly a virus.

Given the problems you are having, we need to approach this until you are improved enough to get a browser session running and can download things directly.

On a PC that can get to the internet, download Hijackthis version 1.98.2 and unzip it to a floppy disk. Small and will fit easily.

On the affected PC, create a new folder c:\hjt and copy the downloaded file there and then run the program. It does not need any sort of install but can just be run.

Click the button to scan and when that finishes, click the button to save the scan log. It will open in notepad so save the file to your floppy. There will be a copy in the c:\hjt folder as well.

On the PC that can post to this forum, create a reply in this topic and paste the contents of the hijackthis log file. We will take a look and should at least be able to get you running well enough to download some spyware removal apps (free ones) and to point you to a good online virus scan/clean site.

I'm moving this to the security section.

You only posted half of the log, so you will need to repost it, but first, You are using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove it and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs...uninstall P2P networking...If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. You may also want to run KazaaBegone to completely purge it from the system. Make sure to get the available LSPFix, just in case. Additionally, there is another new 'nasty' virus using P2P networks to spread itself. More here.

Note** The link to alternatives is down right now, so I will go ahead and recommend WinMX as a replacement.

After removing the above programs (not much we can do to help protect you if you don't remove them), please reboot and do another scan with HijackThis and post a new, complete log.

You are still pretty badly eaten up. Some will need to be cleaned by hand but for now, from Quicklinks (in my signature) get the latest versions of Ad-Aware SE (should be build 1.04) and Spybot (v1.3).

Install Ad-aware (it will remove any older versions it finds), immediately update, set for a full scan, and run it then delete all items it finds.

Spybot - if you have a version older than 1.3 you will need to run spybot and uncheck any protections then go to add/remove and uninstall it before installing v1.3. Once you have it installed, update it then run and remove all items it pre-checks. When that finishes, click on the Immunize icon then on the green Immunize cross and let it protect you against a variety of bad items.

Then run a disk cleanup (open my computer, right-click on C:, click on Properties, click on the cleanup button, and let it remove all except 'compress old files'.

Then scan again with HJT and post the log. Hopefully at least 1/3 or more of the junk will be gone and we can give you directions for removing the rest.

Yep, pretty ugly. :( You also need to use add/remove to uninstall NewDotNet if there. If not there, use procedure #4 from here to remove it.
Also, download CWShredder from here. Save it to the desktop, then open. Close ALL other windows and click fix. Reboot and run Spybot and Ad-aware again. Reboot when done removing what they find and do another HijackThis scan, then post the new log.

Good luck with Ivan. We expect to see him in a day or so but not with the fury you folks can expect.

Run Hijackthis and scan then check the following for removal. Note that the items in green are not spyware/malware but are things that do not need to be running at startup. They simply use up system resources with no real benefit to you.

And with all the problems you've had plus the fact that any 016 entry you remove will be added back on your next visit to a site that needs it, I'd suggest letting HJT get rid of all these as well even though some or all may be perfectly fine. At least one of them is a baddie and I think several more as well.

Not sure about this one. If you know what it is and want it, leave it alone. Otherwise, remove the entry and the folder when you boot to safe mode to remove some known trash.
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WallPaper] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\STARTM~1\Programs\WALLPA~1.90\WA LLPA~1.EXE /h

Boot to safe mode. Set Windows explorer to show all files including hidden ones.

Open my computer then right-click on C: and click on properties. Click the button to do a Disk Cleanup and let it remove all except 'compress old files'. Exit

Open Windows Explorer and delete all folders and all the files in temp folders for all users so:
    c:\temp (if present)
    c:\windows\temp
c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp (for all user accounts)
c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temporary internet files (for all user accounts)

    C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar (the whole folder)
    C:\Program Files\RapidBlaster (the whole folder)
    C:\Program Files\SpyKiller (the whole folder)

Boot back to normal mode and run another HJT scan and post the log.

    Fix these two,

    O2 - BHO: TChkBHO Class - {FA12F8F3-D43C-4131-A845-9A040E45BCBF} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

then visit Windows Update. Accept all criticals and reboot, then go back to see if there are any more. Log looks clean otherwise. Any other problems?

Also suggest you open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then click the link for SpywareBlaster, download, install and update. Check for updates weekly. Still in Spybot, click tools in the left pane, then resident and check the box for SD Helper. Then click IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file. Then download and install IESpyads.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.
