I have a query with regards to the Temporary Internet files folder.

I used to be able to get files from the Temporary Internet files folder. If, I was looking at a page with SWF files, such as a greetings cards page, I could retrieve the file from the cache. Also, music files embedded in pages could be retrieved.

I recently rebooted my computer. I still have Windows XP. Now I find that the computer is choosing what should end up in the cache. There must be a setting somewhere that is preventing files being stored in this folder. Now, when I visit a midi file, the midi files don't go into the cache any more. In fact, very little does.

    Please can someone advise.

    Thank you.

Gill - Welcome to the Board :)

There is a setting in IE under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and scroll down to Security - Empty Temp Internet files when browser closed - is this checked?

No, this box is not checked.

I do not want the Temporary Internet Files folder to be empties automatically as I like to do it myself.

On another computer, this box is checked and files are staying in the Temporary Internet Files.

Even now, my files are not downloading to the cache.

What is the size of your cache? - Tools > Internet Options > Settings

Which service pack version of XP are you running - SP1 or 2?

The size of my cache is 4,689MB.

When I right-mouse click on the Temporary Internet Files folder, it says there is says:

    Size is 440 MB
    Size on disk is 528MB
Number of files is 39,687 files - 38 folders.

How do I find out which service pack I have installed?

Right click on My Computer > Properties. On the General tab under System are shown details of your Windows installation.
By default Windows assigns 10% of the disk capacity to Temporary Internet Files

It's far too big as is the current size on disk of 440 Mb and my guess is that it is corrupted as noted in the thread I posted. 50 - 100 Mb should be more than enough.

    For more information ....

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

As noted in that article I suggest you use CCleaner to clear out your TIF files and the index.dat files which is probably where the corruption lies and start afresh. Make sure that you uncheck cookies and autocomplete, plus all the other default checked items under the other headings. Reboot after cleaning - the index.dat files are deleted on reboot

Gill--Before rebooting, run a Search for *.swf (or whatever file type you are looking for--preceded by a *).
That should show you where those files are going--if, indeed, they are going anywhere on your HardDrive.
Or you can try manually downloading these files using this program

Thank you to everyone who replied to my Temporary Internet Files query. I empties the cache through the Control Panel and my system is back to normal!

Thanks again - so much appreciated.
