heres a tip that might help people having defrag problems on windows 98. this is what worked for me. i know that it gets to 10% and just sits there driving you crazy. try this first defrag once a week. then on drives c and d there is a setting button, on the settings it will say something like check for errors and make the programs run faster, uncheck them then it will say this time only or everytime, check the everytime box. also unless you are really bored dont open the box that says show details. since doing all of this i have cut the defrag time from about 2 and a half hours down to 10 minutes. i still get the message drives contents changed restarting but i think its like its deciding what to do but it does defrag. or you can do what i used to do and that is hit run then type in msconfig and then you can go from there and defrag it in the safe mode. that way is good when nothing else works but it is time consuming. oh if you do have to resort to the run version and you type in mscon and get a message like i do telling you it cant find it just go to your file and folders and type in msconfig and open it that way youll get the screen to help you put it in safe mode so you can defrag. i hope this tip helps everyone who is having this problem and is ready to throw the computer out the window. i stumbled upon this fix by accident.

Another way is to use the Windows ME version of defrag.exe. It's much faster than the 98 version. It's available for download from a lot of places. Google, for example, yielded about 60,000 hits for "ME defrag.exe. "

Or Diskeeper Lite which is a sales promotion FreeWare with limited functions. It beats any Windows defragger hands down.
