SOLVED - Outlook Doesn't Work After Server Upgrade

I am in the process of upgrading a 5 year old file server with a new model. The old server is set up as part of a work group. I use MS Outlook 2003 as my client and I store my PST files on the server. I am using my ISPs POP and SMTP servers (in other words, I am not using Exchange).

My new server is running 2003 SBS - this comes with Exchange built in. The new server needs to run on a domain, and not a work group. I have switched one of my desktops to the domain. When I try to start Outlook I get an error message that says:

Unable to open your default email folders. You must connect to your Microsoft Exchange Server computer with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your offline folder file.

When I hit OK, Outlook simply closes. Since I was not planning to use Exchange, I went ahead and stopped 4 or 5 Exchange services from running on the new 2003 SBS server.

I very much want to continue to use POP3 email. I have placed a copy of my PST file on the new server. I was hoping that all I would have to do is point Outlook to the PST on the new server and I would be back up and running. Boy was I wrong. Any suggestions???

 

Solved

After some digging I figured this out. My Mail was configured to use Exchange. All I needed to do was create a POP3 mail account through the control panel, make that the default address, select the existing PST file as where new messages are stored, and then delete the Exchange account.
