Does anybody really understand installing a PCI software modem ,,, Gen56kSoftmodem??

After spending over 10 hours with CMOS Basic and Advanced Features, Add/Remove Hardware, Add/Remove Programs, Device Mgr., Hardware Wizard, Computer Management, System Info., Event Viewer, COM1,2,3,4 ports, IRQ's and using the EZSTART com port utility (DOS, command prompt)...... over and over ...... with Win 2000 informing me that Devices and Ports were operating properly ..... yet NOT being able to complete a call to the ISP, when an adjacent PC using the same cable could .....W/T/F is going on.

To add insult to injury ..... simply moving the 'SW modem' to an adjacent PCI slot precipitated success. Again I say W/T/F ....

And, yes, the modem did work in the original slot, last month. But I will say that the OS was WinME at that time.

I really would like to understand this .... Does anybody understand well enough to explain? :(

Yup. They can be a real BIG PITA. as you just found out. Once you get it installed and working, you could ( and did ) lose it if you change the OS.

To add insult to injury ..... simply moving the 'SW modem' to an adjacent PCI slot precipitated success.

NO wondering for me. The answer is simple. A PCI Modem.

I take it that the Modem is now working.

But what you describe is a quite common occurance when a PCI Modem is involved and the OS is changed.

BTW. If you decide to change the OS again, be prepaired to possibley repeat the process.

The best answer to this problem is a good FULL BLOWN external Modem.

Next best (especially if room is an issue) is to get a real internal modem rather than a "software" modem. It was a wonderful idea that has just never worked real well. Sorta like USB networking.
