I just noticed that there is no volume shortcut in the system tray. When I go to check the box to let it appear, I get the error message "Windows can't display the Volume Control on the taskbar because Volume Control has not been installed. To stall it, use Add/Remove Prograns in Control Panel. "

I've searched Add/Remove and can't find Volume Control or it's options anywhere. SndVol32.exe is on my hard drive and I've run System File Checker (SFC), but it didn't fix the file, if it's broken.

I've also followed the instructions in Microsoft's Knowledge Base - Article 319095 and when I finish and click Enter I get the message "Can't open input file: SNDVOL32.EXE and takes me to the prompt: E:\ I386.

Please help me to get my Volume Control back.

When Windows take you to the prompt E:\I386, it's looking for the I386 folder which is located on your Windows CD. I'm guessing E:\ is your CD-drive. Put your CD in and see if Windows will extract the file. HTH

    B

ps I ran across this problem recently (can't remember where  ) and someone mentioned using Add/Remove programs (windows components) and I can't find it anywhere in that list either (WinXP)

You're getting that error message when trying to extract that file because it's trying to replace the existing sndvol32.exe and it's a protected system file. SFC would have replaced it if needed so it's probably OK. One way you can try is to send the copy of sndvol32.exe found in your c:\windows\system32 to the recycle bin. It will be replaced by a copy that is in the \dllcache. If that does no good, and I suspect it won't, then check the Device Manager for any yellow blots and right click any that are found, and select uninstall. When you have them all cleared, click Action > Detect New Hardware and Windows will install new drivers.

If none of that works, report back the details.
