I am using Netscape 6.2.1 and the associated e-mail program with several different e-mail addresses/accounts. I have a cable connection.
I have had a re-occuring off-and-on problem when sending e-mail. I get an error message saying

    "Sending of message failed.

An error occured when sending mail. Unable to connect to the SMPT server. Ther server may be down or may be incorrectly copnfigured" It then says to check mail settings and try again.

Problem first occured in the top, or first account listed. Now it is occuring in the second account for the first time. I can still reply to and send new messages thru other accounts.

I have looked at the SMTP settings and believe there should only be one showing...the outgoing given me by my ISP. (it works in Outlook). I notice that after days of messing with this, there is often a "null" listed under what I believe to be the correct SMTP setting. Does that mean anything?

Please, can anyone help with this issue.

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Hi Adele,

    I have had a re-occuring off-and-on problem when sending e-mail.

You and quite a few other users. Unfortunately the Mail & NG's are not up to standard yet. There seems to be a frequent corruption of Mail files, which makes it difficult to use the feature.

Are you aware, that when you edit your Mail accounts that it is necessary to delete the account, and then create it again? This could be part of the problem. You might try recreating the account and see if that helps.

I'm not sure what the "null" mean, but I'll see what I can find out about the error.

    Adele,

In your "View Settings for this Account "
    Account Settings|Identity|Advanced
Have you enabled "Always Use Default Server "
Under Server Settings do you have the correct Port Setting for your ISP?

In the mail/news account settings, if the information for the "default" SMTP server are incorrect, you will be unable to send. Sometimes a typo, or misspelled word can cause this error to occur.

Hello...thanks for responses. I did check and port settings and use default were correct. I do not know how to safely delete a user. Where will my e-mial from that account go? Do I need to back-up a folder somewhere?

    Thanks again for helping.

    Adele,

The instructions that Brett posted are for Windows 95, and Communicator. They would not apply to your settings for Netscape 6.2.1

You can, however, delete the account which is giving you the error, and recreate that account. It should correct the error. If not, you should report this to your ISP. If they concur that all your settings are correct, then you might want to consider using your Communicator Mail program... if you have Communicator installed.

It would also be helpful if you can give us the exact "null" listing that you refer to in the SMTP setting. I have found absolutely nothing in that regard. That makes me very suspicious that there is an error somewhere in your settings. This is why I suggest that you contact your ISP.

I would like to try the deleting process...but I am still unclear. What folders or files of associated e- mails will I need to back-up if any? And how will I restore them after I create a new account?
I am sorry if this is an elementary question...but I am puzzled!
    Thanks

    Adele,

For instructions on how to delete existing Accounts, click on "Help ". Browse to Mail and Newsgroups. Go to "Changing the Settings for an Account ". This will give you the information you need. It is rather lengthy so I didn't copy and past it here.

Back up your entire C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ folder. Doing this on a frequent regular basis is a good idea.

This will back up everything. You can then select from this backup, whatever files you need. You can then copy your mail files back to the newly created Mail Folder.

Copy only those files without the msf extension, i.e., Inbox ... but NOT Inbox.msf. This is done with Netscape closed, and using Windows Explorer.

If you have more questions, please post back.
