    Hi all,

Today, someone gave me a very nice 17" monitor to replace the small one (13" I think) I used to use, but one thing has been bugging me ever since I switched to the newer monitor.

I have a nice MS optical mouse with a scroll wheel. In the past, I could scroll pages very smoothly on the old monitor, but the pages are not scrolling very smooth with the new one.

I have tried various mouse settings to fix this problem, but the scrolling is still not as smooth as it used to be.

Could this be an optical illusion caused by the bigger screen size, or could it be due to the video card having to work harder because of the increase in resolution?......(Went from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768.....I also changed the refresh rate from 60hz to 85hz to correct some minor flickering)

I guess another way of putting it, is like comparing the poor scrolling to excessive play in a car's steering wheel.....Very aggravating indeed.

    Thanks

Check out this Google search - the first 3 hits are relevant ....

    http://www.google.com/search?source...,GGLG:2005-31,GGLG:en&q=smooth+scrolling+++xp

Do you mean scrolling by dragging the scroll bar or using the scroll wheel? The amount of scroll per click of the wheel can be altered - as no doubt you know.

FWIW I also use an optical mouse (wireless) on a 22" monitor at 1280 x 1024 and the scroll bar scrolling is a smooth as you could hope for - perfect, no jitter and the wheel scrolling is as I set it and is fine.

I doubt that the monitor has a lot to do with it except maybe to exaggerate any defficiences in the scrolling which were masked at the lower resolution.

    Hi Pete,

I mainly use the scroll wheel.

I tried the link fixes, but I never could seem to get the scrolling to be as smooth as it used to be. As for the "scroll per click" setting, I don't have that option anymore since I updated the mouse driver a few months ago.....That option has been replaced with "accerated scrolling ". That allows a person to speed through long web pages quickly as you accelerate the wheel.

I think that some of it might have been "eye shock?" (for lack of a better term :D) when I went to the larger monitor. I think my eyes have adjusted to the scrolling a little better now.

But if you scroll slowly, you can see where the monitor is laboring just a tiny bit to display the text & graphics. It really shows up bad on my e-bible software text, as I never had this to happen with the smaller monitor.

Is it possible for the graphics/video card to labor more with a bigger monitor and increased resolution/refresh numbers?

The video card does have an effect on the speed at which the signal is processed - this is very obvious in the games arena where the cards are becoming increasingly powerful to deal with the 3D rendering, etc of games and generally carry up to 256 Mb of RAM on board. For text though a standard - whatever that is these days :) - video card should handle text and 2D images without a problem.

I run 2 monitors - 17 ", 22" off a 32 Mb card with no problems, not even in graphics programs like Photoshop.

One thought occurs - have you loaded the monitor drivers for the 17" monitor - they should be available on the manufacturer's web site.

Before changing the refresh rate, verify that the monitor in fact supports the refresh rate you want to use, else the monitor will eventually fail.

I went to their site (Samtron, 77V model), but there was no listing for an updated driver....or a driver at all.

The monitor is not brand new, but it's not that old either. I might call their phone number and see if I've overlooked anything concerning an updated driver.

Edit: Under monitor properties, the monitor is identified as a Samtron 76E/77E....Could that be the reason there is no driver listed under the 77V model?

2nd Edit: According to the product specs, the recommended resolution is 1024 x 768@85Hz, which is where I'm at.

Right, I have the box checked that hides unsupported refresh rates for this monitor.

If Device Manager recognises the monitor as a Samtron you may assume that the appropriate driver has been loaded - by XP when the monitor was plugged in.

It is listed as Samtron 76E/77E in the Device Manager.

There was a driver that came with this monitor, but the previous owner must have lost it. So I'm presuming that XP SP2 has the latest drivers anyway?

I did manage to call Samtron today, but the some of the rep's advice didn't agree with the product literature settings recommendation.

He recommended that I get another video card. The one I have now is a 32mb (shared memory) made by S3 Graphics, built-in to the MSI board that I'm running. As far as I can tell, I'm running the latest board drivers & such.

Edit: Almost forgot. I asked Samtron about an updated driver, but he was concerned that the driver for model 76E would not work right....Wished he could have been a little more specific.

I have always had trouble installing MS mouse drivers. You say that you upgraded the drivers. I would be inclined to completely uninstall the mouse drivers and it's software and then reinstall from the new/updated drivers program.

Borrowing another mouse to try may tell you something.

As far as I know of, I uninstalled the old driver 1st.

That's an idea..............Never thought of that yet.

Haven't tried a new mouse yet, but I noticed that the scrolling was erratic with the up & down arrows on the keyboard too.

Not sure what is the problem.....Computer's been acting up lately....Might be headed for an OS reinstall.
