    Windows XP Printing Happy Faces

I recently upgraded to Windows XP and have installed all os maintenance. On the prior release on W2000 I had a HP1012 laser printer installed that worked perfectly. However after the upgrade to XP the printer still worked with one strange exception. To wit it started pringing a little "happy face" on a single sheet of paper. And it would do this ever few minutes, all day long. The 'happy face' is in the upper left hand side of the paper. I never could stop it with the "print job" in the printer box thus I cannot find out who or what is driving it. Discussions with my son (my local pc expert) and he suggested that I update the driver, uninstall and reinstall the printer, etc. All of which I have done to no avail. As a result I turn the d*m thing off when not using it but when I turn it on it then prints one or two sheets of paper with the same 'happy face' on it before it starts printing my work. Oh and by the way it does this regardless of what programs I have active. In fact it does this if I have no programs open.

So I need some quidance of were to go to resolve this.

    Thanks, TTP

The smiley above consists of a : and a ) and put together without any space between them the result is like this :)

    Is that what you get?

In addition it has a round circle around the face. So it's more than what you said.

If you type those two together in Word, unless you have set it not to, autocorrect will change it to a smiley which is not yellow but two eyes and a mouth, encircled.

I wonder if the Print Spool is corrupt - make a new folder and call it Print Spool, then point the Print Server to it ....

Control Panel > Printer and Faxes > File > Server Properties > Advanced and enter the new location in the Spool Folder box.

FWIW I use a dedicated partition for the Print Spool.

ttp--Running a HiJackThis scan is a good idea.
But there is a chance some document may be stuck in the printing queue. I have an HP printer. If I click Control Panel|Printers and Faxes|left click on the HP printer icon, I get a small window which has Printer to the far left on the Toolbar. If I click on that, one option is "Cancel All Documents ". Should not hurt to try.
I gather the smilie does not appear when the printer is printing other documents.
I turn my Printer off when I am not using it, also.

Talk about being confused. The process 'status client' appears to be a legitimate process from HP that may bog things down but even if I stop it, it doesn't stop this 'happy face' printing. I also ran the 'free system scan' which only fixes the first 15 probelms (the very easy ones) and then tells you to buy their program to fix the other ones. So instead I ran "Abexo" free registry cleaner and fixer and like all registry programs finds things wrong, so I fixed everthing it recommended and the end result is it still does the same thing: Prints Happy Faces, and now up to 4 sheets of paper on occasion.

So currently I am running "Process Explorer" and attemting to find a process that starts up or shows cpu usage while its printing.

    Any other thoughts??

I have found something similar dealing with a HP printer and Mac OS.

HP Printers - Mac OS: Garbage Text at the Top of Multiple Pages

Here's more from HP that deals with WinXP.

970c only prints one line of icons at top of paper
