I see SmartMedia readers priced cheap and some priced three and four times as much. What is the difference between them? Is there a difference in the speed at which they'll read the data? Is there some difference I am not knowledgeable enough to ask about, but that will be important to me later?

All of those I've been looking at are USB. (I have no idea if there is another type.)

USB seems to be the prevailing version, although there are a few FireWire versions. The differences in them are not clear, but might involve speed, the maximum card size supported, etcetera.

It would be worth picking a brand and searching for reviews on it.
