I have a small rectangular window icon appearing in the systray, staying a few seconds. This happens several times while on the computer and/or the internet.
I use Adaware, Norton. Is it spyware or a system icon?

    Thank you for helping.

    joannan,

Hard to say without more information. If you hold your mouse cursor over it when it appears, there should be a 'tooltip' that will say what it is. If not, you could also check taskbar properties and see if it is listed there... right-click the Start button, then select 'Properties', then click the 'Taskbar' tab, click the 'Customize' button. Scroll through the list and see if it is listed either in 'current items' or 'past items'. HTH

The icon runs through so quickly that I cannot click on it. It usually pops up at start up, then various times while on the computer. It does not show on taskbar properties, or start up. I believe it is something in the registry which I do not touch. Thank you for helping.

If you are concerned about this download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT and not to the desktop or a temporary location.

Boot into Safe Mode, run HJT, select Scan and save a logfile - this will be saved in the same folder you ran HJT from.

Boot into normal mode and copy/paste the contents of the log into a post in this thread.

No - in this case Ad-Aware has been run according to joannan.

Your log is clean - I cannot see any problems.

There are a number of updaters running .....

    Microsoft Works Update Detection
    SunJavaUpdateSched
    HP Software Update
    Quicken Scheduled Updates

I suspect that the icon you refer to may be one of these updaters checking for updates. You could check the shedules for these updaters and the settings for when they are scheduled to run.

    Hi All, joannan
I had a similar problem a while back, See this thread....
    Here

I found it to be a part of HP. Here is what I found and did...

"Watching task manager I seen that my processes go up by two when this happens.
    This one comes up...
    HPOSM.EXE
And this one when I get the open and closing of the window in my taskbar...
    Hptskmgr.exe

Is a part of hpcoretech and hptskmgr.exe according to a Google search.

This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

I disabled it in msconfig. I believe it is checking for updates as PeteC says, but it is from HP.
    Geri

    Thank you for responding Geri.

It is comforting to know someone had a similar problem. This just started to appear about a month + ago, so I will check the task mgr, as you suggested.
