I run a small network at work, we have 2 networks that need to be seperated. one has internet access and the other we just canced it.

Since the inter net conection went we have had problems with printers and a NAS device.

I used to be able to type in the name of the printer/device i wnated to administer in IE but now i have to type the ip address with changes every day due to DHCP.

Is there a way to resovlve the DNS localy? I have tried to use the router for the internet as the DHCP server and set the gateways and DNS setting to it but i have the same problem.

Thanks for any help any one can offer.

IF you want any more infomation just ask.

    Thank You

If use dhcp for permanent devices you'll always run into problems. Use static addresses for printers, nas, servers, etc.

I tried static address but still wont resolve host names to ip addresses.

One of the printers is an all in one, and the software for scaning and faxing searches for it by host name. We can print to it and use eberything else by typing in the ip address but wont work for the printer.

Where are the local DNS records stored? arethey on individual PC's or are they in the gateway/router?

    Thank You for your reply.

You need a DNS server. It is available on any Windows server platform. There alternatives for Linux boxes (usually BIND) or Windows client operating systems. More information here:

    http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/servers/windows.html

You can use HOST files but that is hard work. Try a DNS server first.
