Not sure if this is a s/w or h/w problem - but here goes...

I just bought a refurbed eMachines model T5082 PC and loaded WinXP SP2and everything is working well.

However in Device Manager I get a yellow exclamation that the "SM Bus Controller" is not properly installed. I have tried reinstalling the drivers using the WinXP CD, the Internet and the CD that came with the PC (albeit it is for Vista) and the "SM Bus" drivers cannot be located.

The BIOS reports the m/b as an Intel D102GGC2 (Version AAD70214-201)so I went to
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!
but don't see any reference to SM Bus drivers etc...

I already have installed the drivers for the ATI graphics, Realtek sound, LAN etc and they are all working properly.

I wonder - is the "Chipset: ATI Radeon* Xpress 200 (5365KB) 5.10.1000.7 8/8/2006 Download Chipset driver for Intel® Desktop Boards with the ATI Radeon* Xpress 200 chipset" the drivers I'm looking for??? Don't want to install something that will only create more problems.

    Also - FYI - in Device Mngr, under "System Devices" and under;
    - Motherboard Resources" -> Properties -> I get the msg "no drivers installed for this device "
    and also
    - under "System Board" -> Properties -> I get the msg "no drivers installed for this device "
Although for both of these items there is no yellow exclamation point, so not sure if tgis is a problem or not...?

Other than the warning comment in Dev Mngr under "SM Bus Controller" the PC seems to work well... so I'm not sure what I'm missing...
BTW - what does a SM Bus Controller do?

Appreciate any help getting these drivers etc figured out.

    Many thanks.

Thanks PeteC. The decription seems to nail my problem so I trust I'm on the right track...

From your link I go to:
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-013541.htm
and then I (presumably) click on "... Software Installation Utility" and wind up at:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/ and from there I guess I click on "Software and Drivers" and then "Get the Latest Utility" [Yes?]

Then I select WinXP Pro and get to this page:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

... so then what do i download? -

    "2. INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 3, 900 Series Chipsets - 8.3.0.1013 8/27/2007 (2347KB)" --- ???

Not sure if my m/b is an Intel 3 900 mSeries - so should I just go ahead and try that driver .exe?

    Many thanks.

I'm an AMD & nVidia chipset man, but I'll venture into Intel territory :D

First determine your chipset using the Intel Chipset Identification Utility. Then proceed as you posted and select the Inf update utility for your chipset - it may be lower down the page under Software Archives.

    OK - thanks again.

Should have also mentioned that (late) last night I ran the Intel ID Utility program and I got some kind of a scripting errror - so I'll try again tonight to try and get it working. (Any ideas on why I''d be getting this error?)

Logically as you suggest this should be the way to go.

Will let you know how I'm progressing.

    Problem resolved.

I went to the Intel site and d/l'd the file and ran it on my 'new' PC and it installed the SM Bus Controller utility, which removed the yellow exclamation in Dev Mngr.

However - there was now a couple yellow highlights under USB Mass Storage, which thankfully were resolved when I rebooted.

    Thanks PeteC.
